I think it has shodow/darkness around it that it can mold from one form to another. Thus, it made the shadow assume the form of wings, to intimidate Gandalf& co.

I'm shocked this debate has actually started again. Wonderful will be the day when no one is arguing over the wings of a Balrog or the ears of an Elf. At one point, it can actually make you sick, believe me, I know.

First the admins are moaning that we're not intelligently debating Tolkien's middle earth, now they're complaining that some poor fool ressurected the wings debate. Sheesh.

Yep. That's sorta what I think as well. Manipulation of the dark flame, and of shadow. Interesting that there is no mention of wings in the Sil...

Wings of shadow, people, wings of shadow...

Hey! I've never entered the wing-debate before - everybody deserves a chance.

I was the "poor fool" who resurrected the wing debate, and I did it knowing full well the consequences. I had never gotten two contribute my two cents, and like Anduril said, everyone deserves a chance!

*Anduril is secretly pleased with himself. For now the first stage of his plan (the Taking-over-the-World Plan), has been completed. The first stage required that at least one person use me as an authority figure, in their arguments.*

"Nya ha haaaaa," I laugh (sinisterly). "I will take over the world yet....hahahhahahahhahhaahahahaha"

Anduril, stop being such a little attention seeker. And it's not wise to TELL people your plans...

BoP, you never commented on the fact that I shot myself TWICE (in the head). Now how likely is that?

Bah. Don't make me come over there and spank you, Anduril.

Anyway, back on topic. So we're all agreed then. I'm right, and you're all wrong.

Well, I never moaned because the topic was ressurected, nor that posters didn't intelligently debate Tolkien. It is just this particular topic has been debated to death for years. So there.

The Balrog is a rare species of giant tunneling flame peguin. It is also know as 'The Big Red Rock Eater". The fossil record shows that the Balrogs earliest forms were reptilian and the "wings" were actually "display fans" of slime covered skin. These were designed to attract the female balrog, or balaraga. It is thought that the fierce cry of the Balrog is actually a mating call. The Balaraga, like the Entwife, departed middle earth, disgusted with the males constant drinking and warring. The display fans were selected toward a slacker fit, due to the rigors of combat and the cramped confines of their underground dwellings. While visible during the attack posture, these flaps of flesh are vestigial and useless, as demonstrated by the Balrogs propensity to fall from great heights in a clumsy and oafish fashion.

Well, I'd like to take credit, but it's all in Christopher Tolkien's "The Paleontology of Middle Earth: Volume IV - The Late Voraceous Period".

If you bring back the whole "Randy" thing (originally started by a poster named Morthoron somewhere else, and shipped over to Entmoot by the nefarious Wayfarer), I'm going to have to break my vegetarian diet and have lamb chops for dinner.

To answer your question, you said admins, in the plural. The only other person (besides SGH) who had expressed displeasure towards this beating of a very dead horse was me. And as I was formerly an Ent, not too long ago, you must have been talking about SGH and I. So shove that in your pipe and smoke it.
