Dang! I have got to get those HoME books! Note to self: go to book store tomorrow.

And yes, both Oropher and Thranduil were Sindarin. But the people they ruled were Silvan.

Re: physical description of elves?

"View Orlando Bloom as Legolas
make the ears longer and more slender, the hands should be like muscians hands, long slender, with the fingers tapered, make the eyes slanted, less shallow, more almond shaped and less reflective, raise the cheekbones and make the face more slender, the hair is more golden than white. Lastly the body is less stocky and he is more like a willow tree than any other tree." -

This description would make Tolkien's Elves drastically different in appearence to Men. Tolkien himself states that, but for the Elves being fairer and stronger, they were identical biologgically to Men. When Finrod and Beren alomg with 10 other Elves, were captured by Sauron and Sauron stripped their disguises from them and that revealed to him what they were, the only thing that he needed to see to tell him that one was a Man and the other a Elf, was the light in the Elven eyes.

Also, I thinks since Tolkien says they are biologically the same physically, that shoots the pointy ears theory in the foot.

If your ears are pointy, then what are you?

Look at all of the illustrations of us (Elves). All of us, have pointed ears, just like mine. It comes with age. You start out looking just like the children of Men. Except we're much better looking as children. Have you seen some of the children of Men? ("Eeek! Oh, dang, is that human? Can you get a refund on it? Did the camera break when you took that picture?") Then oh hundreds of years pass and pow there you have it... pointy ears. Thousands more, and they get more distinct. And there you have it... Elves have pointy ears. I rest my case.

Well, if that's the case, then you are in a different fairy tale and not Tolkien, so if you are not a Tolkien Elf then you have no claim to Finrod. I too rest my case.

Apparently: and I'm far too lazy to look this up, but I read over in Xenite that somebody mentioned that one of the early etymologies contained a word for ear that, and I'm recalling from a very dusty memory here, a word for ear translated as leaf shaped. Anyway, my point is, that this is the only reference we have to elves having pointy ears, and it's from the early developments of the First Age (Book of Lost Tales era), so that in itself is extremely dubious. Anyway, if anyone wants to verify that (I think it's in BoLT 2)... if not, I might be inspired to have a look myself.

Booyah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *bows to the mighty BeardofPants*

BTW, I'm not quite sure why, but I've been using the expression "booyah" a lot. I'm sure by tomorrow, I'll be done with it, just bear with me.

Hah. It was entmoot, NOT xenite! Anyhow, a link to that thread:

http://entmoot.tolkientrail.com/show...ht=Pointy+ears

HoME 5:
*lasse 'leaf': Q lasse, N lhass; Q lasselanta 'leaf-fall, autumn', N lhasbelin (*lassekwelene), cf. Q Narquelion [ KWEL ]. Lhasgalen 'Greenleaf' (Gnome name of Laurelin). (Some think this is related to the next and *lasse 'ear'. The Quendian ears were more pointed and leaf-shaped than [human].)

Not really. Hobbits are men, right? And... Hobbits have pointy ears, I believe. Besides, pointy ears doesn't have to get in the way of biology; it could be like skin, or hair color. White people share the same biology as black people, but genetics has selected for slightly different characteristics.
