Well, now that I've followed your discussion to the very end, I guess there's enough said bout that whole weed & mushrooms thing. I agree with both Pailan and bropous (you frenchie, you!); let's not get overexcited over something completely harmless and innocent.
CU

BTW, this is not the only time Tolkien has been mistaken or willingly misinterpreted:
Back in the 1980s, there was a german journalist for whom it was totally clear Tolkien was a Nazi!
For him, LOTR was only a black and white painted racist manifest! I couldn't believe it...

Greetings and welcome to the moot. Atisha.

Well I suppose one could interpert Tolkien in a way that would support a political ideology. I have readabout neo-facists in Italy doing the same thing. And I suppose if you used deconstruncionist theory you could find things that would make Freud blush. I mean all those men with swords...

Glad you are enjoying this thread...

Pailan, at your service.

Let me join you Pailan in woelcoming you to the Moot, Atisha, hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

As for any loony Nazi thinking Tolkien was one of his retarded ilk, all he would have had to do is exert a bit of his research nerve and actually read "Letters of JRR Tolkien". Tolkien wrote a rather withering letter to the German publishers who wanted to publish "The Hobbit" in 1938, and he basically ridiculed the Nazi law which required published authors to give proof of the lack of Jewish blood in their veins.

Tolkien's answer was that he did not, regrettably, have any blood of that "talented people" in his ancestry. This shows, along with his other comments in the Letters as to the limited worth of Adolf Hitler, that he had no sympathy for, and indeed, no truck with, the teachings of the Nationalist Socialists. Furthermore, he would have been as equally disapproving of the Fascists in Italy.

Again, welcome to the Moot from this EIDRIORCQWSDAKLMED
DCWWTIWOATTOPWFIO "frenchie"!

A moral of the whole (after the primary symbolism of the Ring, as the will to mere power, seeking to make itself objective by physical force and mechanism, and so also inevitably by lies) is the obvious one that without the high and noble the simple and vulgar is utterly mean; and without the simple and ordinary the noble and heroic is meaningless." Letters of JRR Tolkien, page 160.

i think it has been well established by the vehement mooters - as far as tolkien was concerned, pipe-weed is NOT mary jane, just tobacco, and mushrooms are of the edible common field mushroom variety and NOT magic mushies.

however i would also like to point out that nicotine and alcohol are both drugs, and are both addictive, and are not harmless, nor innocent.

something further that i can clear up - weed is a rather universal term for marijuana. it is common in australia and in new zealand. terms like weed, pot and mary jane are all fairly universal, i would assume. more obscure terms are twenties (i think they're called dimes or dimebags in america? hence pantera guitarist dimebag darrel ), sticks and sesh. i have no idea about the local terms in nz though!

also, i'm not really sure how exposed PJ has been to hollywood. i was under the impression this was his first film connected with hollywood. has anyone seen any of his earlier works? there's one called "bad taste" (which he acted in) and i think one called "meet the feebles"... both of which are rather disturbing. i'm not really sure how he made the leap to LOTR

oh wait, i just checked imdb and he also wrote and directed "the frighteners" and a couple of other films... hehe

He wrote the screenplay and directed "Heavenly Creatures". He was nominated for an oscar for best screenplay.

i had made note of my folly in my previous post, but a genuine "thankyou" for the additional information, master mcintyre.

i just wanted to add that anyone with a narow enough mindset can find allusions to drugs in just about anything (as bropous pointed out). i think the wittiest one i heard was "harry pothead and the philosopher's cone" *hur hurrr hurrrrr*

if kiddies want a story with magic mushys, they should read "alice in wonderland" and "alice through the looking glass" by mr. carroll.
