I went to visit St. Olaf and Wheaton. I think I like St. Olaf better right now. But while I was at Wheaton, I got to see their Wade Center! It has J.R.R. Tolkien's writing desk where he wrote The Hobbit, and parts of The Sil and LOTR! I got to touch it. It had a letter on it from Tolkien saying why he was selling it: to raise money for needy retirement homes. Also there was C.S. Lewis's writing desk and the wardrobe his grandfather hand-carved, said to be the inspiration for The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. It was so neat! Inside it there were fur coats, and a sign stating that Wheaton College was not responsible for any disappearances that may occur from entering. There were also exhibits on: Owen Barfield, G.K. Chesterton, George MacDonald, Dorothy L. Sayers, and Charles Williams. It had a big reading room with all writings related to these authors, both published and unpublished, such as books, manuscripts, and letters. I would almost go to Wheaton just for that.

Wheaton has an absolutely fabulous lit department. It's also the top evangelical/Protestant college in the country, followed by Grove City I believe.

This week I got a prospectus from a Swiss hotelschool, boardingschool-style. It was very impressive: on the envelope, there were pretty pictures of the Swiss Alps (or snowy mountains with a lake in front of it anyway), very heavy paper, golden lettering and loads of high quality pictures and very colorful yet elegant.
It looked (and is) very expensive and exclusive (which is stressed in the prospectus as well) and they guarantee me a good job... Sounds very nice doesn't it? I do have to get a scholarship for it though. I don't have enough private funds for it

Well, I've decided to attend St. Olaf. It's not official yet, I'm still waiting on results from this huge scholarship I applied for. It's a merit scholarship worth $56,000! I had to go and interview for it and everything, I'm on pins and needles right now waiting.

from sis' question in venting thread: After visiting all of the colleges I applied to, I really feel like St. Olaf is the right fit for me. I think it will help me become the whole person I want to be. My second choice would be UNI, which won't be much warmer. It would be nice if I had applied to some schools in California or Arizona, but I hadn't discovered the issue then.

So Mercutio, where did you end up studying, if you don't mind my asking?

Wow, that's amazing!! I hope you get it!

My own update to college/uni news: I have almost graduated, after six long years. Holy crap!

Here's a question about graduate school: if I go for a terminal Masters, instead of a preparatory one, is the only disadvantage that I can't get a doctorate, or is it just worth less in general?

Hehe; the local community college is very much the "neo penal" style. Our campus is mission style; probably closest to the Gothic Envyist. The Campus Tower is still under construction.

I am so going to get my B.A without going into debt! Just a year and a quarter more to go...

Does anyone know what the difference between credits needed in order to enter a Masters program in America and in Ireland is?
I've been looking at grad. schools and I want to apply to either the creative writing or the medieval studies program at Trinity.

I'm in a MA program in Northern Ireland (but it's virtually the same) and I needed the same qualifications for an MA program in the States as I did here.

Just for the record, I did my undergraduate work at Indiana University, and I'm currently at the University of Ulster.

That's awesome!

The credits should be the same, ie you should just need your BA. Best of luck with those applications when you do them.

No, we're just coming out of hibernation is all.
Spring quarter workload hasn't gotten heavy yet and the rain is starting to let up. Sort of.

Don't even tell me what 'sort of' lighter rain is, in Seattle. I'm happy with my mental picture of this:

cutting back to this:

naw.

"Sort of" in this case means that the weather has been alternating at random between warm/mostly sunny and something very like your top photo with side orders of wind and snow. It's been a very indescisive early spring here.
No umbrellas, though. Umbrellas are for tourists.

Yes. I got my first umbrella on moving to Boston from Seattle.

And it's STILL doing the snow thing? When I left from spring break it was doing that...

On topic: GAH I need to apply for grad school again next year. This process was supposed to be OVER. Bah.
