Well, here's my guess:

Suddenly these people finished off all the maize, and then they had to eat furry creatures. They had no weapons, so they had to hunt down these cute animals by stealthy stalking, followed by a diving chin-butt. The chin-butt continues untill furry creature is transformed into edible paste.

Yes. I already gave the clue for that... ie dietary reasons (change from tough grains, to an omnivorous diet.) But, I was looking for a more detailed answer than that. Alas I don't think I'm going to get it, so I'll answer it myself.

The reason is a combination of smaller teeth, higher brain vault, and a 'warping' (down and out...) of the lower jaw to prevent us from choking , as the skull cavity moved up (the more meat rich diet converting the energy into bigger brains.)
