To put an equal sign between islam and sharia would be like saying that christianity and the Spanish inquisition are synonymous. Sharia law is abolished in Turkey.

Mullah Krekar is a radical islamist. The views of such extremists don't reflect those of the average moderate muslim.

Krekar can hardly be called "our Mullah", as he's been constantly threatend with eviction the last 3-4 years (and will be thrown out, once a government is in place in Iraq). Krekar was the leader of Ansar-al-Islam, a group that among other things attacked and massacred Kurds and Sufis; and thus hardly representative for the majority of muslim.

This has been a problem in Romania for a long, long time. The extent of it came to light when Caucescu got his comeuppance. There are a lot of NGOs working in the country to try to deal with it, and I seem to recall reading somewhere that the situation had got better, though not by any means solved.

I would have thought that this sort of thing would preclude membership of the EU, though if addressed Romania would probably join. Turkey/Bulgaria is more likely to happen sooner, methinks; though of course Turkey has a lot of human rights problems of its own.

So maybe Bulgaria next (hope so, we have an office there). However, after the rejection of the Constitution, member states have put the brakes on a bit.

Romania and Bulgaria are to join the EU next year, given that they manage to meet the agreed criteria. I don't know whether Romania's infamous orphan problem is included in the criteria but as far as I know, there are no obstacles that will prevent Romania (or Bulgaria, for that matter) from being admitted.

It's very unlikely that Turkey will join before Bulgaria or Romania.

[edit] I just read that the EU might postpone Bulgaria's and Romania's entries into the union to 2008 unless they can solve some problems related to civil rights and corruption. However according to the membership treaties that Romania and Bulgaria have signed, their memberships can't be postponed beyond 2008.
