I suspect the necklace Arwen gives him is the "Elfstone" in the movie... That's why Galadriel says something like, "I can't give you a greater gift than this," and touches it.

As far as I'm aware, PJ himself has said the scouring is out. I thought this was an established fact?
True unfortunatley. Saruman dies at Isengard.

Stupid director, thinking he knows what's what. Why can't film-makers accept that what gets into a finished novel is all important. You can't much without losing something substantial and you can't cut anything without losing something.

Yup. The more I think about it, the more PJ's method of death, however it runs, will be a poor shadow of a mockery of Tolkien's. Saruman's eventual death is one of the greatest comeuppences in literature. Not to mention deeply satisfying.

As your sig file says, the only way to ensure a film is not a butchering is to never make the film. Sadly that was never going to be an option. I'm glad PJ has done it and at least got the scenery right, as well as a few key scenes.
Still plenty of room for another version in the future though, although of course you'll then get the stupid situation where people would watch a more book-faithful version and cry out:

'That's not how it happened! In the film....'

etc. It's enough to make you cry

Another thing. Whenever frodo is hurt, he always makes these weird noises I doubt anyone who is hurt would make.
*I still like the movie*

Treebeard Necklace

I always thought the whitish necklace was an emblem of her immortality, which she was giving up for Aragorn - not the Elfstone, which is large and green. Oh well..

I think that there is a flash of green at Aragorn's neck that might have been this stone...

Also... I hope they don't axe the restoration of the White Tree to Gondor from the ROTF... that would make the films decidedly anti-botanical....

Actually even Tolkien made a few mistakes with the Elfstone.
Or rather, with both Elfstones.

Mainly in that he gave the lesser one to Sam at the end, which has been pointed out would be far too great, (and also inappropriate) for Sam.

No actual Elfstone - note how people refer to him as Estel as his 'elvish' name - mucho 'puns' on the word hope etc in the trailers.

So I'd reckon the elfstones are out, or shifted to this weird-ass thing of Arwen's, which kind of implies the way to kill elves is to run around stealing their jewelry. Now I understand what the Dwarves were up to in Thingol's halls when they nabbed the nauglamir

I think the real reason Aragorn said what he did 'You cannot give me this!' is because it's girl's jewelry and no-one would take him seriously if he wore it (which I think was part of Arwen's ploy - make him look unmacho so no-one else would fancy him)

I don't recall any weird noises. I've taken care of severely wounded people, and one does make groans, etc. when it hurts. Strange but true.

I found the wierd noises irritating too! Example, flight to the ford... Frodo's having some kind of asthma attack instead of defying the Nazguls (by himself.)

OK. I've just watched "Return to Middle Earth" so I'm ready to pre-release complaints about TTT. Aragorn fell in a river and almost drownded... WHY?

It was a 1 hour "making of" for the TT. Some more sneak previews a a lot of on the set footage. They showed the building of Edoras. At one point Sam steps on a piece of glass while wading out to Frodo. It punctures his foot. There was a good bit about comraderie and some about the trials of filming (they are forced to melt a new fall of snow to finish filming a scene with Gollum cathing a fish).

Pretty interesting all around. I'll just need to get better at disassociating the book and the movie.

You were clear Cirdan, I just thought you said you "read" it, for some reason. Thanks for the further clarification!

I've found another annoying thing!

when Gandalf arrives in the Shire and tells Frodo about 'Bilbo's incident with the dragon' he says:
Quote:
"If you're refering to the incedent with the dragon, i was barely involved. All i did was, give your uncle a little push out the door."
i mean, i always thought that Bilbo was Frodo's cousin! Anyone agree?

I will not list all my complaints because if I had done so, the site would have been disfunctioning because of the overload of data.
