I was thinking it was one of those two Elf messengers who went from Cirdan, first all the way up to where they met Tuor in the far north - and finally made it down to Nargothrond to give their message from Ulmo. Then they went back to the Mouths of Sirion.

But I forget their names.

Gwindor's a good guess, too. I think the speaker is speaking to Turin but it is hard to say at what point in the story it appears.

Ok, it happens at Nargothrond but it isn't any of the main characters there: Gwindor, Finduilas, Orodreth. I can't recall ANY other named characters there. Does the character have a name? Or is it someone with only a title, like "door warden" or something?

There is a name. It's not a major character, obviously, but there is a name.

Hint: It starts with an 'A' and he's an Elf.
