That sucks Midge. How about this to make up for it: you get free hot chocolate at the Teacup Cafe for life. Now does that beat the Bush administration's monetary policy or what?

Relatedly, the BC government is going to hand out a "climate change dividend" of $100. This coincides with their carbon tax on gasoline (and diesel, I presume) of 2.4 cents per litre. I think they're just trying to make BCers less mad about the carbon tax.

Personally, I don't care about the carbon tax. I don't think it will be much of a deterrent, but at least it will provide additional revenue just when government programs could use a little extra dough, such as education and healthcare. Maybe they will overhaul the Ministry of Children and Families, which I feel has inadequate infrastructure and resources to help our most needful children. Or maybe it will go into clean energy projects or something.

But I am looking forward to the $100. I'm going to put it toward a new pair of hiking boots. My current pair have been demoted to work boots due to the copious amounts of duct tape on the heels.

Sweet.. free hot chocolate is WAY better than probably 300 or 400 dollars.

But my boyfriend's parents claimed him too... and he didn't realize it till he'd already bought a new computer. Oh, well. What can you do? I guess I was more fuming for him than me.. although when the government hands out free money, you can't really help but want some of it. If you've really earned it.

Holy crap, $300 dollars!? That's a lot of money. I could actually buy new hiking boots for that much, not just put it towards them.

But as much as it would be nice for you personally, I doubt it will stimulate the economy as much as is hoped. I'm not actually going to run out and spend the $100 as soon as I get it. I'm only going to buy the boots when my credit card is paid off and I've also saved the remainder of the boots' cost. And the USA is a lot like me right now in that we both have a lot of debt.

Are people really going to run out and spend that cash right away, or are they going to use it towards the damage deposit on their new apartment. They had to move because the owner of the house they were renting lost the house during the subprime mortgage crisis and they didn't get their original damage deposit back, you see.

When the economy is in bad shape, people tend to be cautious in spending. Then again, maybe people will spend the money since it's an unplanned for windfall.

But let's say Bush gives $300 to 25% of the country. (All the adults who didn't get claimed as dependents. I'm just guessing that amount.) That's still about 75 million people, which will cost them $22,500,000,000. It seems that that amount of money could be better used as a lump sum, to reduce debt and inspire investor confidence or something. $22.5 billion is still only 1/400th of the approximately $9 trillion national debt, but it's better than nothing.

I wonder what economists think about this type of economic stimulus.

I'd think that at you're age, you shouldn't even have to ask Mrs. 1500-years-old

Yeah... most adults got 600 dollars... if you were married, then you and your spouse got 1200 (that math made sense). And if you had kids under 17, you got 300 dollars for them (they didn't get it.. the adults did). That's another reason I felt special.. I'm not under 17, so the IRS didn't give my parents 300 dollars for me. Only for my brother.

Because I do not have all the expenses of adults (living at home and such) and because I only barely made a little over the minimum, I didn't figure I'd get the whole enchilada. But I was expecting a large fraction of it. And the point of the stimulus was to get out and spend the money, to get the economy ... stimulated. I don't actually remember what my parents ... No, wait. They were going to pay off my wisdom teeth operation, but it turned out the insurance covered it. So they're taking it on vacation this summer. With that and the settlement from my accident, we should have a nice little sum of extra moo-lah to use at the beach!

Oh! I'll have a slice please!
I just came back from running and then swimming with my sis and her friend. It was great, but now I have a rash again. I hate chlorides. >_<

I'd love a slice too! The best apple pie is the granny smith apple pie.

Midge: I had my wisdom teeth out a few months ago. Tons of fun eh? How about some commemorative soft-cooked eggs. I practically lived off those for the first few days.
