I suspect you don't quite grasp the situation. We have a curfew at 11 Sun-Thu, because we have school the next day. We have a curfew at 1AM Fri and Sat, because we don't. During don rags, we have no school. It would, therefore, make a heck of a lot of sense to have the weekend curfew during don rags. However, the adminstration says that we should "keep school life as it normally is" during don rags; thus, regular curfew and dress code apply. This does not make any sense, since school life is centered around classes, which are in fact the reason for both curfew and dress code. Every law is ordered toward some end. When you take away to end towards which that law is ordered, it becomes absurd.

You could always attend a normal college y'know, where there's no curfew.

In Japan we also had curfew at 10 and you were not allowed to drink at any day of the week. It never bothered me. We didn't have a dress code though. What should I think of when you say dress code? You have uniforms or something?

The only thing that did bother me was the fact that we weren't allowed to put up a Christmas tree because it was a symbol of religion and with so many religions on campus, religious expressions in public rooms in the dorms where not done. Wonder where they got the idea that a Christmas tree is an expression of religion...

Gwaimir, I agree that perhaps there should be more reasons for keeping the curfew. But the curfew itself, I can't see problems with that.

Too late now...it's practically impossible to transfer credits from TAC, because it's such a unique program, and I'm halfway through second semester of my third year. I'm sticking to it for the diploma.

In Japan you're not allowed to drink until you're 21, so it's not that illogical that there is a curfew. That and the fact that we were on top of a mountain with no buses after 10.
Still, we had lots of parties, you just had to be in at 10. That's curfew right? Being in by a certain time. It doesn't mean you have to go to bed and be quiet or something. Or does it? Perhaps I misunderstand the term.

In this case, it means you have to be in the dorm. There's not really much in the way of a possible party in the dorm...we get a wing party each year, which consists of us munching on cheese and crackers in the prefect's room for about a half hour.

Yes, it's illegal to drink till 21, but I'm 23. Or I will be in a month.

BoP: hear, hear. Younger students may need more rules, but those of us who are legally of age, we ought to be given more wiggle-room.

Most people with me in the dorm had only just turned 18. I was one of the older people there. But in my opinion many Asians are so innocent compared to Westerners. Here people have parties with lots of alcohol at age 14. A good party is one that you can't remember next day. Or that is the mentality. In Japan at drinking parties we play Uno. No one is trying anything funny. No loud music, because that will bother the neighbours. Quite different.

Hmm, but perhaps you are right. As I said, I don't really care either way, but I can imagine that if you do like to go out at night, the rules are very restraining.

Drinking age in NZ is 18. So's just about everything else, 'cept for boinking, which is 16. Now tell me again why someone over that age should have a curfew? o.O

Especially for kids who just come from high school, don't live at home anymore, have to get used to new friends, a new routine, etc. I think it can be very useful. I noticed here
(in the Netherlands) that many first year students had to drop out because they couldn't get their act together and didn't pass the mandatory courses. Out of 100 students in my year only 36 managed to pass. Not all of them stopped because of the above reason, but some most certainly did. I still had some classmates dropping out in 2nd and 3rd year because they were spending more time partying then studying.

While I agree with you that that can be a problem, at what point do you think we should stop holding their hands and let them make life choices that may or may not be a mistake? FTR, I left home when I was 16, and spent probably most of it in a drunken haze. I still managed to get through high school though.

When they move out of the dorm. But in Gwai's case it's probably different. I don't think he's able to leave the dorms? In Japan after your first semester you could try and find a place of your own. I don't live in a dorm, but on my own (in the Netherlands universities don't have dorms or campuses like in Japan and probably America also) but I wouldn't have minded living in a dorm. It is perhaps a step in between: not living completely unsupported yet, but still having to make your own dinner, managing your own finances, joint cleaning responsibilities, etc. Some mistakes can perhaps be avoided.

Good guess, Mari; basically, you have to be married to live off-campus. While living off-campus would be grand, the price is just too high.

Nah, you just totally missed the point - that we're supposed to serve, like the greatest one among us did. I'm working on the "liking it" part, though I look forward to heaven, but have no plans on rushing it - there's too much to do here first.
