Gil-Galad was an Elven king
Of him the harpers sadly sing
the last whose realm was fair and free
between the Mountains and the Sea.

His sword was long, his lance was keen,
he shining helm afar was seen;
the countless stars of heaven's field
were mirrored in his silver shield.

But long ago he rode away,
and where he dwelleth none can say;
for into darkness fell his star
in Mordor where the shadows are...

That middle stanza strikes me as all too punnable , but the other two make me want to cry.

He's probably not as popular because he was never a main character in any of the books. If there had been one primarily on the Second Age, rather than it being an addition after the Quenta Silmarillion...

Unfortunate. I'd have liked to get to know this Finarfinion (I wonder how you'd write great grandson of Finarfin? ) better.

Elemmire, do not corrupt Tolkien's poetry! Stop, stop, your ruining it for me!

Why don't you like Gil-Galad himself? He did the best he could, given the circumstances. Maybe we should start a Last Alliance thread. Or a fall of Gondolin thread.

Sorry. But I'm sure that even worse has already been done... I can't read half the stuff anymore... Mentions of the "love of Fingon and Maedhros" call to mind the numerous slashy stories I've had to sift through...

I like Gil-Galad. Let's start a Fall of Gondolin thread. Nurvs, I don't see the logical sequence there...

If you want to start it (either), I'll come over.

Me too! I can't even really say why - I think it taps into the "something beautiful is gone" theme I think we all have in our hearts ...

I do like him - it's just that I like Fingon MORE! Maybe Arty can handle Feanor's seven sons, but I'm a simpler gal - Tuor for my human side, Fingon for my elvish side

I think the poetry of Tolkien was what really drew me in, besides the exciting stories...And that's not the only thing he wrote that makes me want to cry...And then I get mad at myself for crying about some guy in a book...and then I get mad at myself for thinking of ME as only a book....long cycle of guilt...

Ever heard Frost's poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay? I, er, translated it into Quenya in an odd mood...

Nature's first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold
Her early leaf a flower
But only so an hour
Then leaf subsides to leaf
So Eden sank to grief
So dawn goes down to day
Nothing gold can stay.

I think I love that poem so much because I had just revived my ME obsession when I learned it several years ago, and it reminded me so much of the Eldar and simply the Elder Days in general...

Of course, I've come to believe that I'm so Elf obsessed (still) more because of the bittersweet flavour of their existence, and the idea of a time long gone. That's probably also why I love the First Age so much... Now all I've got to figure out is that Finrod obsession...

Anyway... a bit more on topic (less speculation and semi-philosophy, more ogling ).

SGH's mailing order is hilarious, isn't it? I don't plan to take it out of my sig any time soon... That series is unbelievable.

Hello, I was told to come here for some hilarious stuff. (It's all Feanor's fault I believe.) Anyone want to catch me up? That poem was also in the Outsiders, which is a favorite of mine.

Welcome to the moot, and this lovely thread...

...but perhaps I should have warned you away from it instead...

Who's your Silm guy? Pray tell! Pray tell!

El, should we confess what has been occupying our last couple hours on the internet?
I think it fits into this thread.

Well...this has turned into a poetry quoting thread hasn't it? No matter.

Oh, sure the elves are all good. Most are good with there...weapons, and some will even make you really pretty jewels (stop thinking that!). But what does a girl really want in her man? Why, when your feeling a little blue you want your man to make you a planet. Heck, why stop there, an entire galaxy, or perhaps universe(that might be easier to manage).

Eru is my guy. As handsome as he wants himself to be, creates his own people *cough* amusment *cough*, locks the perverbeal(sp?) door to keep out evil, and makes pretty music. Plus you don't have to worry about his hand coming off...and you most certainly don't have to worry about him falling asleep during the most important parts of the story.

That's my girl!! You are cool in my book...I'm pretty attatched to Aiwendil, a Maia...So, it's nice to see someone who isn't completely devoted to elves...or men...

Well, he is the all powerful you know. And I rather like him because I'm of the belief that he didn't create everyone else becuase he was lonely, he did it for entertainment! I mean, if you could create an entire world and then watch your creations screw up, wouldn't you? Plus...since he is the all powerful, he's gotta look better than all of them combinded right?

And do tell what has kept you occupied these last hours.

"Fairest of the House of Finwë" is handsome enough for me. And he can make pretty music too!

Nice pick, though.

Yeah, yeah, you can say what you will. At least he didn't marry his sister, like Turin.

Mmmmm...I just don't reallly feel any emotion, good or bad, for Turgon...Well I'm glad he existed because of Idril and Earendil.
