Gollum

You know you are obsessed when:
1. Someone at work/school calls you "Lord of the Rings kid."
2. Somewhere on every paper, you put the Angerthas rune for your first initial.
3. Everyone asks you how LOTR ends.
4. You are always trying to remember how "A Elbereth! Gilthoniel!" goes.
5. You keep reading your LOTR books over and over until you finally see one that you don't own.
6. You visit Entmoot every day.
7. You refuse to let anyone borrow any of your LOTR books because of the fear that you will not be able to look something up.
8. You KNOW that you're obsessed when you go to the weast coast of...anything and begin thinking that you'll go into the West.
9. You are always quoting things said in Rat Race (oops wrong thread and forum)

When a fellow LOTR geek comes up to you on March 1, 2004 and the first words out of his mouth are "Clean sweep!" and you know what he's talking about.

When you start wishing you lived in the Shire when things get a bit rough...I'd give up indoor plumbing to live there.

I don't think getting one of those tattoos would be so abnormal.

You know you're obsessed when you clear everything out of your brother's old room, and the only new furnishing you bring into it is your Hobbit and LotR box set in the place of honour on top of the desk.

Me neither, as a matter of fact, I was thinking about getting Gandalf's Rune on my upper back. It'd also be cool to have the ring's inscription around an ankle (like the ring).

Some things I'm guilty of in addition to many of the others listed:

1) You have an electronic file (PDF) to have a quick reference on the books at work or at home in case of an "emergency" (Send me a PM if you want a copy - ~13MB).
2) You've got a compressed version of the films in order to put them on a CD and listen to them in the background as you work (with a peek every now and then on your favorite part).
3) You've got a ton of the little action figures (I'm 27 years old).
4) Your desktop background and screensaver at work are of LOTR jpg's.
5) You have a map of M.E. on your cubicle wall at work.
6) Next to the map you have your name printed in "Elvish".
7) Everyone thinks you're crazy cause you have that stuff up.
8) You have almost every collector's item available (i.e. - mugs, newspapers, magazines, action figures, posters, TV guides, etc).
9) You only ask for LOTR stuff for Xmas and birthdays.
10) You have dreamt about LOTR.

The map on my cubicle wall has a title of "upper management is here" with an arrow pointing to Barad-dur.

Eh, I always do that. Accidentally.

It's not good to work at a supermarket and mix up the words 'thread' (as in at Entmoot) and 'aisle'.

I know what the screensaver is like, cuz I've got the same thing! My bosses think it's funny (and one is sort of a fan anyway). I wish I had the map, though. I'd put an arrow pointing to Barad-dur with the caption "Albany." (New Yorkers will know why...)

Have this so non-lotr (esp. Entmoot) discussion board people understand:
Teacup Cafe=Deli
Thread=Aisle
Forum=supermarket (would that work?)
Barad Dur=Boss's office
RPG Forum=Book Section
Some of those might work.

Okay, I'll bite. What in the LotR does "clean sweep" imply?

Sounds like some shire calendar thing...

... but I guess it could refer to all those awards to won that it was nominated for? :confuse: In which case, I don't think I'd be particularly proud/obsessed for admitting that.

Hmm... strangely enough, I don't seem to have all the symptoms of obsession. I guess that makes me, what... the rational one around here? Go figure.

--How to know your Tolkien obsessed--
aka... the stupid thing that Elemmire did today

I know it's not LotR... but the same idea, really:

You really really really want to read Morgoth's Ring (HoME 10 - I think), and can't find it in your own town. So you spend 5 hours taking buses from town to town going to at least 6 different book stores looking for it, to no avail. So you're finally told to go look in the local library (you're a college student here and don't have a library card), and get there right when it's closing. So... now you're so frustrated and upset that you couldn't find this book that when you get back on the bus, you get off at the wrong stop and end up lost and alone at night in the middle of a highway.

And as soon as you finally get back home, the first thing you do is go on line to try to figure out again where exactly you can find the book.
