It's nice to see Scandanavians getting along so well. So when does the bloodshed start and the raping and pillaging.

The History Channel is going to have a series on about vikings and the Monguls and they're calling it - "The Barbarians are Coming"

They also have the "Civilize the Barbarian Photo Contest"

Quote:
You Might Be a Barbarian if...
* You pick out your wardrobe based on the "sniff test."
* You show your appreciation for a good meal with a belch.

If this describes you or someone you know, grab your camera and enter the Civilize the Barbarian Photo Contest for a chance to clean-up, in more ways than one!

Entry is a snap!
* Take a picture of the barbarian in your life.
* Tell us which horde he/she belongs to
Viking | Goth | Mongol | Hun
* Plead your case in 100 words or less. Why is your nominee in dire need of a makeover and how will his/her "civilize-ation" improve your life?

10 finalists will be selected based on creativity, originality and historical relevance and their entries will be posted on HistoryChannel.com one week prior to the January 19 premiere of Barbarians. Visitors to the site will vote for the "barbarian" most in need of a makeover.

* Check back on January 13 to vote for your favorite of our 10 finalists.
* Visit us again on January 20 to see who is the most barbaric of all!
This might be slightly off topic but what Scandanavian do you think we should nominate. I say we should send in Jonathan's or Falagar's picture.

I think Ruinel is going to be bringing the popcorn for the big fight. Can't wait - I'm getting hungry.

At least we get along better than you and almost every Canadian on this board.

What do you say dear neighbour, time to gang up on the USA-American?

A recent test just proved that Norwegians are best at understanding the other languages in our neighbourhood (Denmark, Sweden and Norway), and on the same page it was claimed by a Swede and a Dane that Norwegian was the easiest language.

Well that's because Norwegian is just a mixture of Swedish and Danish

If there's going to be any raping here it's going to be done by me!

I had one in my sig on another messageboard but I shamelessly stole that from Disc World: "Fabricati diem, punc."

I should probably settle for something like "Mare invictus"

It´s very funny that everyone think all the vikings were violent killers. The truth is that very many were friendly traders, quite boring actually. I guess the story about the terrible killers from the north is more interesting, though.

Most of it was a result of the raiding, pillaging and everything else.

Barbarerna kommer! (Swe)

Barbarii Oriundus! (Latin)

Que vienen los Vikingos! (E)

Barbaarit tulevat! (finnish)

...I was actually trying to find in Finish, French, German and so on just for the fun of it.

"Que vienen los Vikingos! "
An actual headline from a Spanish newspaper before the infamous WC qualic football match between Norway and Spain in last year.
Don't ask for the results...

Actually no. Irish defenceless monasteries might have been attractive and easy preys for the vikings, but the villages along the coasts of Europe were more likely to trade with the vikings instead of fighting them, simply because the vikings had good stuff to trade. It wasn't like the vikings always came armed to the teeth so that the villagers had no choice but to trade to avoid slaughter.

So they stole from the Irish so's they'd have something to trade with the French?

That isn't entirely true according to the History Channel's website. After 739AD they started taking there ships deeper into Europe and raided and pillaged there too.

They did, but they traded too.
I wouldn't say their trading was a result of their pillaging.

I was joking on the previous post. One thing to keep in mind is that there wasn't just one single country sending out groups of vikings to do this or that - with a consistent 'viking policy'. These were basically groups of guys from the same village who would get together and do whatever was convenient. If they had something good to trade, they would try to go and trade it. If they were inclined to go raiding someplace and take something - well, then that's what they'd try to do. Naturally, if they want to trade, they'll go someplace where the trading is good and where something they want to get is available. If they want to go raiding, ease of target may dictate - along with potential booty.

I'm sure that's an oversimplification - and eventually the players got bigger - someone had a small kingdom and went out raiding with a fleet of ships - maybe even to take over some other area (like Normandy in France - or part of England or Ireland or whatever).

You can go here - http://www.historychannel.com/barbarians/ and click on the vikings tab on the right hand side. It will give you a short intro about the vikings. It mentions King Harald Hardrada who unifies the viking clans and attempts to take over England.

I'll probably watch it so I can see how uncivilized the Scandanvians are/were.

Hey, this is the Languages thread. I'd like to see you write that in Italian or Swedish, since I don't understand much French. English does't count as a 'language' since it's the Lingua Franca here anyway.

Though I must admit that the Vikings and Harald Hardrada's story, is fascinating. We learned all about the Battle of Hastings in school and all that. Medieval history was fun! *Goes off in search of Norse myth*
