Perhaps I'm not too concerned about the matter. But there has recently been a lot of talk like this in the Cafe, wonder why..?

Did it start with talk of marriage?

To me, it can either sound a) camp, or b) condescending. But then, of course, I'm not a woman.

But then, of course, it depends completely on the context!

Excuse my ignorance but what does "camp" mean in this context? It sounds like you're saying "Saying 'dear' to people sounds like a rowdy country place where children go over the summer to experience the great outdoors and to relieve parents for a while."

i.e. "Oh, dear! That top thimply lookth RAVITHING on you!" also, "Oh guuuuuuurl! You are jutht TOOOOOOO much!" Usually accompanied by a flippy hand, limp wrist, and a strange affection for argyle sweaters and well-pressed khakis. See "Flight Attendants." Typically here in south Texas, it is women who will call you dear. Men will usually call a girl, "darlin'", if they know her well, and typically women will also call you, "honey," while men will only call women they are good friends with (in fact usually only wives/daughter) "honey." Keep in mind that's more of an outlying thing, though. Typically people who live in or very near cities wont use any of that, or have any sort of twang/accent, but people who live more on the outskirts or in rural areas will definitely be more likely to do that. |

I was surprised how many times I was called 'sweetheart' or something in that vein when I was in the US. In Dutch, it wouldn't cross my mind to use that sort of terms on people I don't know (or on people I do know for that matter). On the one hand I didn't mind, but on the other hand I think it's a shame that such sweet words are now pretty much used as empty words.

This has startled me before, being called "honey" by a Texan woman I didn't know that well. In the context in which I grew up, "honey" was only used among family or very close friends.

Guys. Today the opera went awesome, but the best thing happened beforehand.
There's this thing called 'circle up' where everyone gets in a circle before we go on stage, and we just kind of say positive things, and get our energy ramped up so that we can perform well. Today we were singing for a bunch of highschool kids, and there was a very serious moment where the director was talking about how it means so much to these kids, some of them have never seen a live show, most of them have certainly never seen an opera, how it's so great that blah blah blah. I mean it's a great opera, but dang... You know those moments where it's kind of a, "Oh we're sooooo amazing and we're doing these kids suuuuch a favor by performing for them," moment and you just want to say, "Enough with the self-back-patting." So he said, "If we can go out there and just.... touch the heart of one child...." In perfect unison I and the girl I was standing next to turned towards each other and lightly placed a hand on each-other's hearts. Totally unplanned and perfect unison. I almost started laughing out loud, which would have ruined the touching moment . Luckily cuz I'm such an amazing actor and give so much of myself to these poor unfortunate high school students I held it together.... but it was an awesome, random moment. |

So... it's really hard to get used to a whole new forum! The one I'm talking about has much stricter rules than here... you guys taught me bad forum habits! Plus I'm not familiar with anyone there.

The first one has a lot of moderators, the second one is only moderated by the owner - he says that he wants the forum ruled according to his own principles, which are to give people a lot of freedom and only interfere when absolutely necessary. I guess it depends also a lot on the age group of the intended audience. There's a considerable age difference between the members of those two fora.

Yeah, the one I'm trying to get into is for younger people, and for a very Christian crowd. I'm glad to be on it, but it is so difficult to get used to not talking about whatever I want.
*Whoa* The ctrl commands work; I didn't know that!

The opening night of the opera went fantastic. The adult crowd laughed a LOT more than the kids... I think a lot of the humor in the opera is over the heads of the high school kids who were there before.
Sooooooo I also have a new beta fish, named Rutabaga in honor of the opera. My 'secret pal' (who revealed herself because it's opening night) gave me a gift bag and said, "Don't let it tip over. Be REALLY careful with the bag. No, I mean that seriously. Don't tip it over." all super intense. O_o So I opened it and found a beta fish inside. I was super stoked. I'm only still awake right now because I'm waiting for Rutabaga's water to level out to the water in his new home (a really big vase--don't worry, no plants, so he has tons of swimming room) and then I'm off to bed. |

I don't ask a permission for that. But - if I can't be polite or smarmy, just imagine what I'll be...
Mwahahaaa and all that, ...understood, Sane.

I know, it's such a shame. Just because they can live in a container the size of your hand doesn't mean they should. Ugh... I just can't even imagine. :-/
Yes, it's a big ol' glass vase. I think it's like a gallon and a half... there's a bit of a trade off going on there. It might like a little more room, but the slightly smaller size means that taking care of the fish is a lot easier. I think it will be happier if the water is consistently cleaner. Plus I've heard that sometimes they don't like the bigger tanks... i.e. a ten gallon or whatever. I don't know if that's true.... but either way I don't have the time or energy to really take care of a ten gallon tank, and my last betta fish seemed happy and lively enough in that same vase. I'll have to take a picture. Rutabaga is a really beautiful sapphire-blue color. Last edited by Tessar : 03-06-2010 at 01:01 PM. |

You will add something for him to hide in/under though, right?
Our fish have some green and a sunken boat.
