Hands down, the stupidest CD cover I've seen for a classical CD, in a long time.

I've just bought a CD with Dvorak's New World Symphony and several Slavonic Dances. I've only listened to it once, but has anyone else ever noticed in the New World Symphony some vague resemblance to a few themes from Star Wars? Or am I the only one?

You know Earn, I have noticed that. There's also a piece by Dvorak that sounds uncannily like the theme to Spongebob Squarepants! That Dvorak guy was a real plagiarist apparently. I don't now how he did it, but somehow we was able to visit the future and steal tunes from Spongebob and John Williams .

Well, I was going to suggest that maybe Williams got somewhat inspired by Dvorak, but now that I hear Dvorak's already implicated in yet another plagiarist scandal, the truth can no longer be ignored!

I bet the Doctor's Tardis is mixed up in this conspiracy somewhere. *nods*

Yes, and Dvorak is not the only one, I found out. Apparently Gustav Holst, William Walton, Dmitry Shostakovich, and Richard Wagner have all made trips into the future in order to steal tunes from John Williams.

And the really sad thing is, he can't sue them!

Indeed. He stole Darth Vader's theme, switched it around a little bit, and used as the leitmotif from Siegfried in parts of Der Ring des Nibelungen.

I always suspected him though...he was too original. It couldn't have been without help.

How incredibly beautiful the Ave Maria by Schubert can be, played and/or sung by the right people *happy sigh*

Though it's hard to beat the Bach-Gounod Ave Maria for over-the-top sentimentality.

Wow. Sibelius' Seventh Symphony is definitely my favorite by him. *sigh*

This is a huge year for music. 250th anniversary of Handel's death, 200th of Haydn's, 350th of Purcell's birth, and a couple more who have slipped my mind.

How is it a huge year? Their death or birth anniversaries aren't going to change the music they made all that time ago... Please explain

I quite liked the New World symphony after listening a couple of times to it, so I've decided to make another effort to enlarge my meagre classical music collection. I've bought Beethoven's 5th and 6th symphony, and Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

Yup, and some recent B-Days of Mendelssohn and Schubert as well. Plus Lukas Foss died, as did Vernon Handley (last year) and Richard Hickox.

I simply meant that it was historically significant. Of course, no doubt there will be numerous commemorations, so it will effect it in that way.

Just a suggestion for everyone: DON'T join a Classical Music-specific messageboard if you want to listen to your music in peace. Talk about getting your blood pressure up!

I'm surrounded by music majors all day, every day. I don't need to join any message boards to get opinions on music .
