Welcome Azrael!

I agree with people encouraging you to read the books!
Starting with Lord of the Rings, I guess? A good place to start - and there are even more books to read later, although they all tell of events earlier than those of LotR.

Its a well put together book but the author breaks away from the story alot to explain things. you know like "he lived in a hobbet hole- not the normal dirty cold hole with worms...." not really what it said but you get my point. good book none the less but you have to be awake to read it...so much imagery

I don't want to encourage blasphemy, but read it globally for the story the first time and take your time to read it again for the details

But imagery and description are what makes a book good. They'd be rather boring if they didn't explain anything...

Well yeah, but Tolkien was good at writing a lot which is interesting, but not directly necessary for the story.
Only now that I'm rereading it thoroughly again after reading it for the story before, can I appreciate all those long descriptions. I imagine that for someone who does not like to read a lot, the story is more interesting at first then the descriptions.

And I think you have said elsewhere that you are reading The Hobbit first and are reading that right now - I recognize the beginning with the explanation that a hobbit hole means comfort.

There's less of those comments - those where the narrator speaks to the audience - in Lord of the Rings. I actually doubt that he uses that technique at all in that book. Perhaps because he's not aiming it at children. So you may like that book even more.

Let's hope he will like it, though

To jog somebody's elbow is a new expression to me ...

Indeed! And if you don't only teach me new expressions, but also teach me what they mean and how to use them, I'll be even luckier!
