Why did the company of Dwarves and Hobbit change their planned route of travel through Mirkwood, and who gave them that advice?

Beorn gave them the advice that caused them to change their plans. The main forest road (that they had intially planned on using) was often used by goblins. The road itself was rumoured to be over grown and difficult at the eastern end, also impassable marshes at the eastern end. This road would have taken them far to the south of the Lonely Mountain.
