One of my grandmothers is named Grietje, but she hated it so much that she had it changed to Margriet and then my parents go and give me the same name...
To answer your question Hector: Grietje is originally a normal name in some parts of the country, but it is often used as meaning "some girl", "girlie", and can have a negative connotation.
The English version would probably be "lass".

Yeah, that story has been keeping the Netherlands in its grip for a few days now. The headlines of all papers are about this and the news keeps a list of the shows where Peter R. de Vries is invited.

I don't like Joran, but I would like to say that Peter R de Vries ( I wonder what the R stands for...?) is a very annoying, not likeable, arrogant guy who always has a smug expression on his face and was probably the guy who always told tales on others in his youth. He hounds his victims and though it seems likely that he was right in this case, he has also been wrong in cases, has been sued for "stalking" people he suspected and is in general a pain in the ass. Just to give you an idea of the show and the methods this guy uses to solve cases.

For me, and I am only speaking for myself, here, I settle down in the Teacup with my chosen beverage and maybe a buddy or 3 to just chat about things entish, and congratulate friends on their successful schoolwork. I try to leave the serious issues of the day outside, kwim? So I feel badly not reading part of what my friend Hector posts because it's too unhappy for a light social occasion. It does make sense. But I've also been doing the news thing for a while now...

Maybe I should start a 'news' thread exclusively for this stuff...

I appreciate your news updates, and I should have been warned by the 'slimebag' heads-up, so it's largely my fault. It was just one of those weeks where I didn't have enough extra padding in my emotional space. :/
