Summer college courses done with now! My sister's husband got me to join here months and months and months ago, and this is my first post! Finally!!! I've heard good things about this place! I'm hoping to get into some trouble, erm, fun times here. Don't worry, I've managed my own pages back in 2001 to 2003 when I was doing fan fictions, I was 17 when I last did a full fan fiction. So I know about following the rules and so on about that.

*Hugs everyone who seems to be in need in these dark hours. I come with tidings in this late hour with cookies! Who wants cookies? I can't eat them all!!!*

Rofl, cookies are the internet's longest going inside joke, I swear they must be!

I'm thinking of picking up a 'How to Read Shakespeare' book I know is sitting on our shelves and seeing if I can dive a little ways into that just for starters. I'd still like some ideas though.

Anyone?
Literature is a good place to start. Shakespeare is the pinnacle of English literature. Seems like a good place to work to, but I don't know if you want to start with Shakespeare. I'd recommend something from the end of the nineteenth or the beginning of the twentieth century; my favourite literature tends to fall in that general vicinity, at least. But then, maybe your tastes differ from mine.

Well, yeah, obviously travel is great, but it be a bit out of the question for college students. Learning languages is also great, but I don't know if it would have too much affect on your conversation. Unless you learn Spanish in Southern California, or summat like that.

(out of curiosity, which Indian?)

I do know what you mean, Tess. I only have one friend with whom I can really talk about everything that interests me. All of my others, the things that interest me the most are things they don't really care about that much. Doesn't mean they aren't my friends, but it is most unfortunate.

I'd suggest:
1) Learning languages. Planning/hoping to improve my Spanish and German, and to learn Italian and Arabic myself - and Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Swahili, Zulu, Russian, etc, etc...

2) Traveling. Looking at stuff is never so much fun as when that stuff is placed in a country where they they talk with stiff upper lips and/or you can sell your daughters for camels. It also let's you use 1) - win-win.

3) Re: literature, I'll just recommend three of my favorite authors: Orhan Pahmuk, Umberto Eco and George R.R. Martin. And of course there's always the classics; Joyce, Tolstoy, Hemingway, etc.

4) See teach12.com's catalogue, lots of cool stuff.

It's way fun.
Also very true. A lot of my conversations are largely composed of listening.

Na, nothing else. I'm not into anything like liquor lol. I don't like my coffee too black either. Yep I'm the sister of A'mael the Green and sister in law to Ingwe the tank commander Elf. "A'mael" and "Ingwe" are out playing miniature golf right now. They've been more busy than me, especially now that I'm out of class until, heh, late August. I'm going to be a senior soon and including senior year I have 3 years to go, 2 of them post-grad. Eh, it's better than getting out there in the world all too early (with the traffic and the road rage and the rude coworkers and the gun-slinging disgruntled types). I'm the patient type. I want to wait, as long as I need (or want) to. I hope that when I do get out of taking classes altogether that I don't have far to go to work. That will be my main objective -- find a job close to home as Ingwe's is. There be plenty of schools around here to teach at lol!!!!!

Amanda, you want to be a teacher? That's nice! We've got a few others around here who aspire teacher-hood
What do you major in?

That's something I hadn't tried - I used to edit things together on my own, but now I tried the multi-quote, and that's what I'll use from now on!

(I only tried it as an experiment - there were no multi-quotes I wanted to quote right now ...)

Hey, they have holidays at American colleges, no? In addition important to start early, makes it easier later on.

Learning languages isn't just a grammatical exercise - or at least, it shouldn't be. As you learn the language you often also pick up a bit of the culture, which can be handy knowledge, and knowing a language makes acquiring new friends easier. Anyway, was thinking of educating oneself in general, not necessarily just for conversation-starters.

When it comes to Indian...I'd have thought Sanskrit would be the most fun, while Hindi probably the most useful. I'll have to do some research when/if I get to it. Lots of wishful thinking there, I'm afraid, unless I want to spend the rest of my life studying (which doesn't sound that bad, really ).

Belonging to a man. O, be some other name!
What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So hector would, were he not Hector call'd,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes
Without that title. Hector, doff thy name,
And for that name which is no part of thee
Take all myself.
Love the name, Hector. Always reminds me of this scene:

Quote:
"Talk not of oaths (the dreadful chief replies,
While anger flash'd from his disdainful eyes),
Detested as thou art, and ought to be,
Nor oath nor pact Achilles plights with thee:
Such pacts as lambs and rabid wolves combine,
Such leagues as men and furious lions join,
To such I call the gods! one constant state
Of lasting rancour and eternal hate:
No thought but rage, and never-ceasing strife,
Till death extinguish rage, and thought, and life.
Rouse then thy forces this important hour,
Collect thy soul, and call forth all thy power.
No further subterfuge, no further chance;
'Tis Pallas, Pallas gives thee to my lance.
Each Grecian ghost, by thee deprived of breath,
Now hovers round, and calls thee to thy death."
Alternatively, this.

*I is sloshed and happy about it. My G. Aunt is feeling slightly better, I think the fact that we all daas ja'ami went up to visit her cheered her greatly. So I went out the night before and got boozed up with all of my cousins and I am having a ball right now cooking up yummies with them. Cubans are fun people.
