Belthronding, the bow of Beleg comes to mind first, (but, I am having some trouble fitting it to the clues).

Alright. This one has been hanging on too long. It's the bow of Angrod, the one which killed Mîm's son.

How does that bow fit the riddle? Refresh my memory. It isn't in the Sil.

Is it really a prison? If it's not a prison... well... it could be imprisoning someone without actually being a prison. What place had very tall walls? Are they real walls, or figurative walls? They're wooden, so I imagine they're real.

If it's prisons, I immediately think of Thangorodrim. But that was stone.. wasn't it? There was a high wooden fence around Calas Galadhon.. but I don't recall them ever imprisoning someone. I imagine they did, of course.. but it wasn't of consequence and therefore not useful. Could it be .. Mirkwood? The tree trunks were thick and tall, and the dwarves and Bilbo felt very trapped in them... later they were indeed imprisoned there, but that was in the Elvenking's halls.

If we're on the subject of trees.. it could be Fangorn, I suppose.. or the Huorns at Helm's Deep for the Orcs. Or Doriath.

Were the Halls of Mandos made of wood?

Could it be the Old Man Willow, imprisoning Merry and Pippin? If I only get one guess, that will be it. Although it would be nice to know if the tree thing is anywhere close.

Is it not? At least it's in The Children of Húrin.

Anyways, the bow is mentioned to be great, and I believe it was better than any Gondorian bow from 3rd age. Angrod really didn't have any trouble (ethically) shooting that lesser dwarf. Due to this, Mîm insisted the bow to be broken, and that if Angrod should ever wield a bow again, he would die by an arrow. And so it happened that he died when an Orc arrow hit him, IIRC (this does mean "if I remember correctly", doesn't it?) in his eye.

Okay, thanks. I do recall reading that story.

P.S. My trip to the Sil to look for the answer did lead me to my latest riddle about Luthien's prison, so thanks again!

That's the one. Thank you.

Well, it's back to the Riddling Room for me. In the meantime, try these old classics if you have not seen them yet...

1.

A Hobbit habit found in a wizards bowl.

2.

What is it that...

What is it that occurs in a place yet is not a place,
but is rather a reason to gather?
A rare event of expression and debate
to discuss the issues that matter?

3.

Tools of war
above the fire.
Found in homes throughout the Shire.
Useless items of little worth
exchanged as gifts back and forth.
If any hobbits want to see 'em
in Michel Delving there's a museum!

Have fun!

Sweet. I love being the tools by which people can figure out riddles, even if I don't figure it out. It's a good feeling.. to know that your intuition was good, even if you didn't know the specific answer.

Maybe, but the key question to ask is: Is it wooden?

Maedhros' nail doesn't count!
