Speaking of music.

I just got back from a week long "Governor's School" program at Univ. of DE. I went for instrumental music (oboe). The Chamber group playing was so fun! My favorite piece was from the London Trios by Haydn. We did the Allegro movement from one of them (number?). Also, in the "Faculty Favorites" session, my oboe teacher (and head guy of gov school music) played Carl Nielsen's 4th Symphony, Inextinguisable. I really liked that one (speaking of Nielsen, he wrote some oboe music). And someone else mentioned Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique (when talking about the stories in the music, behind the music, etc.) .

I don't know that recording. I have some recordings by Carlos Kleiber (RIP

) Beethoven's 4th, 5th (GREAT!!!!) and 7th. And also a very vivid Brahms 4th. So far he's never disapointed me.

I've heard that he's also a very good conductor of operas, especially Strauss... but I don't know about Tristan.

Anyone heard/heard of the Marcello Oboe Concerto? I just got the music (tangible piece of paper) the other day--I have to learn this one for All-State Band/Orchestra auditions. (I also have two cds with the piece).

Has anyone else noticed on some cds (esp. with oboe/flute/clarinet solists), they have to mike the soloist so closely that you can hear the keys clicking? I've noticed that on two of my cds. Once I notice it I just can't get it out of my head.

Bruckner! BRUCKNER BRUCKNER BRUCKNER!!!!!! *dies because Bruckner is the best person who ever lived, and because his music is so wonderful, powerful, and magnificent that one has to hold one's breath while listening to it...*
This Giant-Symphony writer has just entered into my top five list!
I have his Fourth and Fifth symphonies, conducted by Georg Tintner (both on NAXOS).
And Mahler's eighth! how monumental! how collosal! (Robert Shaw, and nobody could have done it better...)
Die Debussy! Die! (Actually, I like Debussy's music, but I just hate him...lol)

Very glad you got to know Bruckner! I think I have the feeling for him that you have for Berlioz. I know he's not THE BEST, but he's my own particular favourite composer. You have still to discover his 7th!!! and 3rd!!! and 9th!!! and 8th!! and the rest, and the masses...

And after being familiar with them you can try a version by Celibidache. Then you'll have reached the Heavens of the music.

I'm glad also you discovered Mahler's 8th. Now for the 2nd...

But why do you hate Debussy?

Debussy? I don't really hate him, I just think he's overrated and doesn't deserve first place as Greatest French Composer

Merc! of course Bruckner does'nt place over Berlioz!
Right now...Berlioz, Bruckner, Dvorak, Mozart, and Mahler! (remember's the spectacular 2nd and 3rd movements of Symphony No.9...and the 1st of Sym No.1!)
I will faint if I don't get my hands on Bruckner's Te Deum soon...

Bumping this crackalackalin thread up.

My pastor plays classical guitar; he studied at Peabody. Its really tough.

This week the DE Syphony is giving a free opening night/season concert. The Presbyterian Church in Germantown PA has a wonderful concert program this year (all free but one; that one is only $15 anyway). They've gotten some amazing people to come-- terrific organists, youth orch. of Philly, PA boys choir, other professional choirs and groups (they are doing Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Requieum, Saint Saen organ symphony, and a lot more). I was amazed when my dad showed me the flyer.

The Philadelphia Orchestra might go on strike (contracts expire...tomorrow); the guys in charge were saying they would cut some people from the orch. to help with budget problems. Of course the orch. says that will cut quality (probably right). Anyway we'll see how it goes.

In spring they are doing the Strauss oboe concerto woo hoo!

Update: The Phily Orch. had their opening season performance as scheduled.
We're getting tickets for the oboe concerto concert.

and (this is major news for our beloved pres.)

I got 4 cd's at Border's today (they had a buy 3 get 1 free deal).

The first one I picked out was Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique w/ Sir Colin Davis conducting the London Symphony Orchestra!!!! !!!! !!!! !!!! !!!! !!!!

I also got Spanish classical guitar music, some George Gershwin, and medieval English vocal stuff.

I don't think I've ever heard any Berlioz music (don't vapourize me

).

I just can't get past that 1812 Overture. Tschaikovsky is my favorite composer (I guess), and now I don't have to look at his name to spell it.

I have all of these great CDs, but I can't listen to a single one, since I don't have my own CD player yet and the one I'm borrowing from mom refuses to play CDs of any type.

I absolutely love "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky/Ravel. It's so wonderful

. Sigh. Oh and George Gershwin's stuff is really really cool.

I absolutely detest "Bolero" (by Ravel). It is so boring. I'm sick of that melody. Did ya know that Ravel himself called it "piece for orchestra without music." No kidding!

I have a sudden urge to hear Beethoven's Fifth. But I still have to agree with Leonard Bernstein, and that too many people think Beethoven is the only composer. Anyone read his book, The Joy of Music?
