O.o

FF: "we're married"
Ruinel: "no we're not"
FF: "yes, we are"
Ruinel: "no, we're not."
FF: "yes, we are"
Ruinel: *picks up chair and hits FF across the back*
FF: *goes flying into the audience - lands in the lap of a large woman wearing a large print flowered dress and too much makeup*
Ruinel: "are we still married now?"
FF: *face buried in fat woman's lap* [weakly]"yes"[/weakly]

Hey, Jonathan can take my place as your wife if you want.

Jonathan is now FF's wife... there... done.

Good, then perhaps she and Jonathan will be enough to take my place.

Well for British people it's interesting because it shows you an "alternative history", e.g. what would have happened if Queen Victoria had never been on the throne? How would Britain today be different? The speculation is actually quite fascinating. It's only a funny piece of trivia though, and I don't know why anyone outside the UK would care unless they had a special interest in history.

Question: I thought British law stipulated that a monarch could not be divorced. Wouldn't that cut out Charles all together (along with most of his siblings)? Or am I completely lost?

Sorry, but Henry VIII quite famously divorced twice, and still stayed on the throne. There isn't a law that says the monarch can't divorce, but as Head of the Church of England (strangely enough also thanks to Henry VIII) it is now deemed improper for the monarch to divorce as it doesn't exactly set the right example.

Hence the Abdication Crisis in 1936. Though apparently, Stanley Baldwin recommended the King should abdicate because not because of public opinion in Britain, but because he was worried that Canada would get upset.

I've been waiting to share that bit of trivia since I heard it I mean - Canada?!

Yep, Falagar, that's right

I don't actually know (and couldn't find out) the rules on accession to the throne and divorce. But .... I wondered though ... if Charles perhaps doesn't have the great problem for marrying in terms of the Head of the Church thing, because although he divorced he no longer has his former spouse living. So whether rather the problem comes in if he wants to marry someone who does still have a former spouse around.

But I may not have this right. Anyone know any more?
