I don't mind soul but can you really place it under the category of rap? There is a very concrete distinction between the two.

Hey Im old enough to remember Flashlight and Parliament Funkadelic (remember Sir Nose?). But Id call de la soul more trippy hip hop then soul or rap.

Although that brings up a point: these genres meld. Like any other MUSIC.

So what's the difference between hip hop (trippy or not, man!) and rap? Is HH just the more dance oriented stuff? I'll have a serving of that please! I'll pass on the rap!

I meant public opinion on this thread. Of course the general world public calls it music; they have the sense to realize that.

um rap is basically vocal delivery of words to a beat. hip hop can be a variety of things but is usually more instrumentally involved (sometimes) and can include rap within its artistic scheme. a little more "groovey" i guess you could say.

*too lazy to read the last two pages of the thread and impatient to put her two cents in*

I almost cried for joy upon reading the title of this thread. I hate rap. If I hate it, in my own opinion soley, then I do not consider it music. Easy as that. My 'friends' at school love it. They are ghetto trash but that is not to say that all people to love/like rap are. There. My opinion. Heehee....my keyboard makes a nice clicky sound....

I would put some of my favorite quotes here, but at the moment I'm indisposed. Just think Lestat de Lioncourt, Winston Churchill and my own depraved mind.

There are many types of music that I don't like, and some that I downright hate. But I still consider them music. Rap, however, to me is not music.

Basically the same idea Gwaimir. Different levels of disliking music--the worst level is not even considering it music .

Some rap is ok. I really hate the songs about "bling-bling" though. IMHO a good rap sond is "I can" by Nas. I only say that because of the message of the song. Other then that song and a little Eminem I don't really listen to much rap. I also don't like the stuff about about drugs, sex . . . I think it stereotypes black people saying that they all talk like this " Fo' sho brotha I gots me lots of bling-bling and shorties". I'm short

Tell that to the guy at your local music store when you ask him "where is your non-music section? I want to buy some rap."

Lol Rex. Hmm...I think its more about a matter of how you feel personally, not really what a record store dictates about what is and isn't music.
