How deep can a hero be? (IMO) much deeper than a villian, who is usually wrapped up in him/herself. With villians it's usually all about "me". (boring) Something "really bad" happened, (first sick third of a sicko story! ) and turned them down the "Dark Path" years ago. Now we shall be entertained by the shock and "horror" that has come from the deep wound in the twisted tortured mind.(yawn). The villian goes Mwhaaa haa haa, and still isn't happy. Oh the perverted sicko, whatever will he do now. Oh the horror, the "titillation"! (yawn) Can we have a big group "EWWWWWW"!

Hmmmm. I have a dark side somewhere, but it has gone into hiding at the moment. Anyway, I have major problems killing off my characters, especially if I've become fond of them over the course of the story. Even with the minor characters, I don't like to kill them without reason.

But the author doesn't have to do the villain that way. I like the minor villains better than the major villains in some ways, because I think they can be "explained" in a larger variety of ways. What about a religious fanatic who really believed that it was not only OKAY to kill non-believers, it was her duty?

Or someone who truly believed that if the heroes triumphed, their entire race/nation would be enslaved or killed? This isn't an unrealistic situation; there are some countries where people are held in ignorance by their governments. In this case, they are trying to defend their (probably) already miserable lives from getting even worse.

How about someone who is a slave, and is only fighting for the villain to win freedom for his family? Okay, now picture that slave as the deadly assassin. You've got a villain who isn't necessarily "all about 'me'."

I have a slight interest in all things macabre. I wouldn't say I'm obsessed with it, but there are periods of time when I delve closer to an obsession than others. ::stares at black clothing and pinky holes:: Eh.

I'm hardly gothic, though at times I do lean toward liking that style. I do, however, greatly enjoy some of Poe's work, and Shakespeare's darker things, at times. My favorite Greek play is Antigone, which is fairly tragic. I'm also obsessed with the character Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights.

Writing dark stories, ah, nothing new. I went through a period of time during my freshman year when my stories were chock full of symbolism and characters with suicidal tendencies. None of them ever killed themselves, though. My most recent dark story was written last August, and it had to do with a girl (named Antigone!) who was extremely odd and had talent for writing. Implied abuse was abound in the story, and you found out in the end that the actual reason the bills aren't being paid is because she killed her father while he was watching TV. Weird.

What's stranger is I am actually a fairly average person. I've never attempted suicide, nor have I ever wanted to kill anyone. ::shrug:: I like happy things too.

I think that certain Mooters would disagree...

Occult is dark.

Ah yes, but it isn't only the minor villains who have to behave in that way. Major villains don't have to be unreasonable or unexplained. None of my main bad characters had inborn tendencies toward evil or violent behavior- all of them turned that way through circumstances in their lives. My minor villains tend to actually have a little less excuse in that way than my major villains, for they deliberately chose this path without outside events in their lives effecting them. The minor villains are deceived, but they have less excuse for being deceived.

Those villains probably wouldn't even be real villains, though they might be perceived so by the opposing side (The heroes). The reader will know and understand the perspective of these villains, and will be sympathetic, though also very tense.

Is anybody here into BDSM? One of my best friends loves erotic asphyxiation...*shudder* I can't stand not being able to breathe, definitely not for me. But I must say, I love blood. It's pretty, and red, and warm, but it goes all sticky when it dries. It tastes good, too. I love Poe! The Pit and the Pendulum is my favorite Poe story...or The Cask of Amontillado. Mm, morbid authors...yum. For some reason, I don't normally read dark or angsty fanfics, although I have been known to write them. My favorite type of weather is gray, overcast, misty days, although I hardly ever dress in black, and none of my friends would describe me as a goth.

Yes indeedy; Poe rocks!

I agree, I love misty weather, though it doesn't have anything to do with dark side; more the mysterious/magical/mystical appearance it gives. I can really imagine a misty stand of trees is a faerie wood.

BDSM?

BDSM = Bondage-Sadomasochism. Yuck, I hate that.
I do like angst, I derive some kind of pleasure from reading and writing it. I think I will have to read some Poe stories now.
