I disgree with that. There is a difference between going to church and being religious. More people might have gone to church after 9/11 - but that quickly faded away after just a couple of months.

There has been a lot of talk lately concerning the difference in views of religion between America and Europe because it seems as if Bush's constant mention of his religion rubs Europeans wrong. The interview the BBC did with Tony Blair was completely contemptuous of his religion. I couldn't believe that the interviewer asked "Do you (and George Bush) pray together?" I could not believe the tone he asked the question in and I couldn't believe he even asked it.

A recent study showed that 65% of Americans pray - whereas only 32% of Europeans say they pray.

The US does not have a state religion - unlike England which does, but higher percentage of Americans practice their faith and go to church, temple or mosque. Far from the terrorist feelings that we are a godless society - America is very religious. It's just that we're allowed to worship as we feel or not to worship if that is our choice.

America was founded by people who were persicuted for their religion - that is why we have the seperation of church and state - but at the same time - that is why even today the US is very religious. Newark New Jersey was founded by religious people, there are two shore towns today in New Jersey which still follow the strict religious principles they were founded on. One of them is trying to get the no-liquor law changed though. Europeans seem to find it amazing that we have towns and counties like this.

There was a lot of ridicule in the European press concerning Utah and Salt Lake City during the Olympic Games because Salt Lake City was founded by the Mormons and it's a very religious city and it's very being revolves around religion. Many rules needed to be bent to allow alcoholic beverages at the olympics and everything else.
