"Come on, who are you kidding. Tolks went to Oxford University remember."
This individual knows very little of the Oxford of Tolkien's day. Nor does he know much of Tolkien's closely-held beliefs. A good reading of "Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien" may shed some relevant light. Wayfarer, good quotes there, but in no way do they indicate sex. They reflect more of the "courtly love" of the old epics, the old chivalric ideal, not blatant (or even intimated) sex. Kissing, hugging, holding close, yes. Sex? Nopers. Maybe that was your point, though. I need more coffee.

A moral of the whole (after the primary symbolism of the Ring, as the will to mere power, seeking to make itself objective by physical force and mechanism, and so also inevitably by lies) is the obvious one that without the high and noble the simple and vulgar is utterly mean; and without the simple and ordinary the noble and heroic is meaningless." Allright, here's a question: If you had the choice of being in Beren's place, or being in any other fictianal romance (say-rand Al'Thor), who would you pick?

Brop: While it's true that Letters dispells any hints that Tolkien was anything but an upstanding citizen and all that, Oxford WAS at that time, a lot more liberal towards homosexuality.

How many hearts have you just broken?!!!!!!!!!! But I have to agree that the long blond hair doesn't do a lot for the "I'm not gay" image. Although Orlando himself is a very different story- MIAOW. Mind you I like the slightly feminine elf look, I wouldn't mind running my fingers through that hair!!!! So excited- this time next month I will be in a theatre watching the film- I can hardly believe it!!! I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mx

One of the reasons I love the LOTR is because there is no explicit sex scenes and such; there is so much in TV and movies these days one gets sick of it. The lay of Leithan is beautiful, one of my favorite works of Tolkien.
I'm getting really sick of people saying Legolas is gay. Crazy people out there....... starofelendil: there is a Beatles thread in the Entertainment forum if you would like to post something. I think that picture of Arwen and Aragorn is when he is dying at the end of ROTK. But then I'm probably wrong.

Seriously though, that makes no sense at all. Oxford is, and always has been, about as liberal as Attila the Hun. |

BoP, what is it with your obsession with homosexuality? Who said anything about homosexuality? The question was on premarital sex, my dear Kiwi, and homosexuality had nothing to do with the discussion, at least as it pertains to the points I was addressing. I think I got caught in the crossfire here. Check your target, belay firing orders!

...then your comments regarding homosexuality should have been addressed to Sween, BoP, and not to me.
