I have that problem -- we all like different stuff. I don't eat much anyway, my husband eats meat and doesn't like vegetarian food, and my kids like peanut butter sandwiches and crackers, that's it. So I usually just make whatever sounds good, and people either eat it or they don't. I don't like throwing away food, so I just make a small batch of whatever it is. It is hard to please everyone, so eating out when you can afford it makes sense because each person can get something they want.
But I love to cook, so I'll keep trying those new recipes anyway!

I actually don't think people have to eat healthy all the time. I'm not going to. I'm going to eat what I like - I'm going to die anyway. Might as well enjoy life and eat what I like.

The medical community keeps coming out with something else that'll kill you. I'm not going to give up french fries or baked potatoes just because some study now says that those items cooked at high temperatures MAY cause cancer.

I'll still eat italian bread or bagels with butter. I'll still eat red meat.

I agree with everything JD has said, especially about teaching kids, not getting rid of advertising! I could probably count on my fingers the number of times my parents took me to fast food places when i was little, and as a result, i never eat at fast food places when i can avoid it, and i am very aware that it is bad for me (although i really love fries!)

I think the problem with fast food that no one has brought up is what the fast food corps are doing to the environment. I know its cliched, but Mcdonalds IS cutting down the rainforest for their cows and well i don't hugely want to go on a rant about animal rights factory farms environment etc, but i could because this topic brings it out in me! Also i just found out that i can't (being a vegetarian) eat mcdonalds fries because they are fried in beef fat

Nobody seems to have mentioned metabolic rates yet. Some overweight people are blessed with overactive ones.

Not really. I don't think there would be too much in the way of hygiene benefits. I mean, you never know who's been there.

School food is like something from thirty years ago that never changed. I visited my son's school and they were serving hotdogs on wonder bread and soda.

Fast food is good when you are traveling. I would much rather risk a McDeath burger than some of the places I've made the mistake of stopping at. I used to think my son liked Mcd's until I realized he stopped eating it and really just wanted the toys.

An important factor about the health aspect is the quality of the fat. If you are prone to heart disease or high blood pressure then what you eat even early in life is important. And don't think your are carefree and not worried about dying. Dying is the easy part. Paralysis and brain damage aren't much fun, though.

You don't need to eat whole bran, stone ground wheat to be healthy. Moderation, balance, and quality of ingredients goes a long way. JD is right about fixing for from scratch. It is the best way to eat. If my kid doesn't like it we just wait until he's hungry enough that it suddenly tastes good. Nobody will starve and the habit grows until the familiarity makes the food taste better. My son is the only 8-year old I know who loves a good salad.

Taxing unhealthy food? Eh, there is no way your taxing my ice cream!

I rarely find chocolate, sugar-free, frozen yogust, but I like it when I do. Since I eat no mono- or di-glyceride sugars, my fat tends to burn up unless I really over-eat.
