Tater,
calm down!

seeing the movie was the first step! and I remember how insulted you were when someone said mean stuff about your artwork.
nuff said.

Well I thought the story was creative.

I wasn't offended by the fanfic per say, except that it annoys me when people try to put themselves in this world that some of us have been studying for years now, when they don't even really know what it's like. Tessar, I can't ever remember being offended by constructive critism, or even when my Galadriel was insulted in a non-constructive manner. Other's spoke up on my behalf about that.

I don't like the redundance. Honestly, it slays me! A lot of other people get tired of it, too, but I think the last thing any of us can handle is another romance fan-fic. It just lacks any potential interest and creativity. We mostly want suspense, action, and a conflict of life and death between avouched enemies! Or is that just me?

And I agree with Darth: we've been reading and studying this world for quite a long time, and you really have to be exposed to the books in order to truly understand it.

I agree, except i'd replace "truly understand" with "even begin to comprehend" but I'm an extremist

Either way you put it: it deals with somewhat knowing what Middle-earth is about. A movie isn't going to tell you, nor show you that. You have to read it from the original source: the book.

Whoa . . . I hadn't really read this thread before. Yikes.
I'm gonna have nightmares for weeks, Tater!
Because, I hope you realize that I am out if you go by your guidelines. I've only been obsessed for about a year; so I haven't studied Tolkien's works like maybe you have. So you don't want me here, do you? You don't have time for semi-depressed 12-yr-old girls, do you? You'd rather talk with the elite group of folk who read LotR 20 years ago and have studied the details and little itty bitty things since then.
Well, then, good for you. I don't even wanna be some elite Tolkien- goddess, and stick up my nose at all the people who are trying to learn. No, they're no good, huh? Just because they don't instantly get lots of knowledge means they're lowly scum-beings. You know, even you were a newbie once.Everybody has to start somewhere, or they'll never learn a dratted thing.

Now look, you've gone and made me mad. Oh, wait, I forgot. You don't care about me . . . Namarie.
(That wasn't intended to be a flame, I'm just seriously mad. Sorry)

good one Arathorn

I agree with Laura, if not using quite the same wording , my feelings are still the same.

I mean I have only read the hobbit (the book not tristons autobiography ) and FOTR, the rest were read to me and the rest of my family by my dad, but I left at several points because I was tired of it taking them 5000 words to say "I love you" "but I don't love you".

I enjoy some tolken but not all of it.

as a rule, if I had to choose between reading LOTR and seeing the movies, I would probably see the movie.

sorry if I'm not a dedicated fan, I'll go if you hate all tolken "wanabe" fans.

Definition of fan : someone who admires or is enthusiastic about something.

Defintion of Fanatic : someone who's enthusiasm for something is extreme.

Fan : Tessar, Laurelyn

Fanatic : Tater.

I believe both are welcome here if discussion abouit the subject is what they want. Though i do think reading the books is a good start if you come on a tolkien message board.

There, but for the tact of Tater, goes another one.

Cue: Another one bites the dust....

Firalphian, I'm a writer too! You do sound like you have talent (probably more than I do), but you have to remember that not everyone is going to like your work, and that fanfiction, especially for something as deeply studied as Tolkien's works, gets a lot of bad rap.

Never stop writing, no matter what anyone says, just be prepared to hear a lot of stuff you don't want to.

Tessaract12 and Laurelyn, sometimes it helps to read Taters posts.

Tessaract12, looks like you have developed an interesting theory about the message of Lord of the Rings, looks like you are the bigger fan than you thought.

Firalphian, you don't need to apoligize! This topic has been festering on Entmoot for a while, and anything will make us go up in flames. Anyway, the story is well written, which is the important thing, and Firalphian didn't know that she was accidentaly touching on a sore topic with fanfiction, so you needn't get mad at her. This board is a board for those who are fans of Tolkien. Firalphian explicitely said that she had not read the books but couldn't wait to, she said she would edit it once she had read LotR, that this was only a rough draft. She was very brave to post a rough draft, knowing she had only seen the movies, and I respect her for it! (I can't stand to let anyone see my drafts. )

Firalphian, I hope this thread isn't giving you a bad impression of Entmoot, we aren't usually as hard on people.

But things like this do sorta make you see Darth tater's point, don't they? I mean, if that's how you feel, why are you here? Why don't you go to some Tolkien-hater place or something?

Exactly. If you folks actually read my posts, like CBG said, you'd see I didn't say you had to be a fanatic, just that this is a board for fans of Tolkien, specifically his work LOTR, and if you haven't read that there's really no point in you being here.

*enters thread, is blown away by blaring music: Another one bites the dust...* Woah! What happened here?

I agree with Elf Girl's last post.

I would just say that this might have been better recieved had it been in the LotR Movies forum, just to make it clear that it was a movieverse fic.

Firalphien and Imbequareiel, don't stop writing or posting, the admins just get a little cranky sometimes when they haven't had their coffee.
