I wouldn't say Raul Castro is a huge change to Cuban politics, really. He's been his brother's right-hand man for fifty years already. What's he gonna do differently?

More news:

Nader runs again for U.S. president
What I don't understand about this article is Ralph Nader is introduced as a consumer advocate. Isn't he the leader of the American Green Party?

EU-27 Emissions down 8% since 1990
Well done EU members! Please continue embarrassing our politicians; maybe they'll eventually start doing something.

More killed in Turkey cross-border offensive
This is something that the media hasn't being paying enough attention to.

No, he isn't. He hasn't even been a member, mostly. He's what we refer to as a "carpetbagger".

The Greens in the US. *sigh* Okay, first you have to understand this. http://www.greenparty.org/index.php
http://www.gp.org/index.php

You can see from the second link that the Greens (as a political party) are already partway through their own primary season...with candidates that didn't include Nader. He, of course, had already endorsed Edwards, during the Iowa caucuses. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1207/7647.html

If you read the political/presidential section of this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ralph_Nader you can get some idea of how chaotic the Green Party map is, and the ZERO amount of work Nader has put into making it an effective alternative.

Everyone knows a Nader. Naders like to get up to the mike, but never hire the hall. Naders have big ideas to start things, but figure other people will do the scut work. Naders lose interest quickly in things with no press coverage.

And, of course, Naders, if they get a chance, have millions in stock while criticising corporations.

If you have the idea I dislike the man, I can tell you...he earned it.

Nurv, you are batting a 1000 today. Climate change (not the oft touted and erroneous global warming/carbon footprint/ Al Gore debacle!) is to the earth as Raoul is to Cuba in leadership. "not much change" WOO-WOOO!

Woah now, I never made any connection between the stories. I was just posting interesting things.

And you have an extra "a" there. It's "batting 1000" or "batting a thousand."

But I'll make it up to you for nitpicking by posting something I think you'll enjoy.

I was just coming to say so. A true loss.

And Nurv, I don't know about Canada, but "batting a thousand" is grammatical, hereabouts.

I know he was a giant in the Conservative movement (invented modern conservatism as we know it), but I haven't been familiar with his work.

He did play Harpsichord though, which is a huge plus in my book.

Nurv's point, though, is that "1000" already contains a quantifier for the "thousands", namely, in the 1. It could be read as "one thousand" or (more loosely) "a thousand". This being so, "batting a 1000" would be at best "batting a a thousand."

Always liked reading William F. Buckley, even when I totally disagreed with him, which was almost always, but then I'm a sucker for that elitist snotty Anglophilic style of snark.
He was pro-segregation and anti-Civil Rights Movement in the 50s, but realised the errors of his ways in the 60s (he also had a soft spot for Franco and clerico-fascism in general).

He certainly looked with some dismay on the Bush/Cheney perversion of conservatism.

I think it's one of those odd mistakes that is now a permanent expression. It really should be "batting a hundred" (percent), though, I think. I think it only came about because they had 3 places to the right of the decimal point for batting averages (e.g., .459) so a perfect percentage would "look" like the number 1000 (e.g., 1.000) Is that right, do you guys think?
