Hmmm, this is very confusing. Does this mean that New England is part of England. There are two seperate continents North America and South America. There is no American continent.

I like the "over the pond" expression - typical Brit understated humor! Is "across the puddle" still used for Brit/Europe?
yes, we do still say over t'puddle
and we use 'across the water' for uk/ireland

Hehe, Staties...
i like it too... i've heard many refer to us as 'the states'... eventhough, when you live here the expression 'staties' usually means the state police... which is rarely a good thing

Central America is not a continent. It is an area consisting of countries like Panama, El Savador and Costa Rica. It extends from Guatemala to Panama. It is a region. The central American region is part of the North American continent just like the Middle East is part of the African and Asian continents.

Mexico is in the continent of North America.

Thanks Rian, but I've never used the term. It's a bit too much of a mouthful (fingerful?) for me. I prefer US, states, stateside, or yanks (which *has* been known to draw some flack (some people have taken it to be derogatory, when it was only ever intended to be used in fun) , so again I deferred from using it).

We antipodeans use "across the ditch" to refer to either NZ or Aussie.

Oh, that reminds me of something my youngest son used to say - he LOVED Thomas the Tank Engine, but couldn't say "Thomas" - he always called him "Pommy"!

A quick look at wikipedia lists some common continent naming conventions.

Here they are. Interestingly enough, the central american continent *is* listed as part of the nine continent model, however it is really uncommon. Interesting stuff. Personally, I subscribe to the six continent model, where Asia, and Europe become Eurasia. (Though I could be persuaded to buy into the five continent one where the Americas are one continent.)

I don't see the problem here.

Is anyone seriously suggesting that Americans shouldn't call themselves Americans?

This isn't a recent thing, it has been going on since 1776.

They lived on the continent of North America, so they called themselves Americans (the colonists that is). It seems like a no-brainer to me! Other countries chose not to go this route.

People from Canada call themselves Canadians.
People from Mexico call themselves Mexicans.
People from the USA call themselves Americans.

Problem? I think not.

The term "American" has come to mean a person from the USA, I'd say deal with it.

Have you ever seen it used to describe a Canadian or Mexican? I certainly haven't.

I'll try to get some more history on why we call ourselves Americans. I'm sure its more tradition than ego (it's not that we think we are the only worthy country on this continent).

Honestly, let's not be all politically correct here on entmoot. I'll continue calling Indians Indians too

And I'm proud to be an American.
