I don't say it's wrong - i just say it's different. I never cared about what measurement system someone else uses - or how they spelt their words, or how they form their dates. If someone says something in celsius or metric - I just convert it. it's that easy. I'm not going to change the way I do things - and I don't expect the US to do it just because the rest of the world finds it difficult.

BTW - the time format is adjustable on the user cp. So Europeans can have their date formats in the format that they feel comfortable with - but the default is American format - since this is an American Messgaeboard.
I never said that you should change it, I was just stateing that everyone has their different ways of doing things. It's what makes people individual.

Well I didn't mean it directed at you - and maybe I should have left my other thoughts in there. It's just that it seems like a lot of people think that we should move to the metric system, that we should write our dates in the european style, the we should use the british spelling.

By the way - it seems like VBulletin doesn't give users a way to specify the date format. I thought it did - PHPBB does. Oh well.

why do you call the season of autumn 'fall'?
is it just an urban myth that it is because leaves fall of the trees in autumn?
and what word do you use instead of 'autumnal'?
because 'fallal' just sounds ridiculous

No it's not always right - because American English is different. We reinvented the lanuage when we sent Britain back across the ocean. This is the reason why there is British dictionaries and American dictionaries. There are two different English languages and American English is no more wrong than saying French is wrong because it's not German.

We say fal because the leaves fall and we don't say autumnal at all. I see it's an adjective - but I don't see why you would say something is autumnal.

OK, I think I got all the updates -

ALso, are the English people OK with just England, or do you want UK, too?

Let me know your preferences, Mooters.

'autumnal equinox'... but most Americans just call it 'the first day of fall'... for short!

(ED: we actually use BOTH words... 'fall' and 'autumn'... besides, the autumnal equinox is the first day of SPRING in the S Hemisphere, right?)

Taiwan: GMT +8;

no DST - too near the Equator- I miss twilight

!2:00 noon GMT = 8:00 pm

And, of course, "tomato", like "potato", is not English- it comes from the Aztec language, which is why Tolkien dropped it from the revised version of 'The Hobbit' in favor of 'pickles'.

Not that I ever fall into the etymological fallacy....

(My parents coming from Lancashire, I grew up pronouncing it 'to-MAR-to', causing ridicule and psychological trauma at school )

Oh yeah - forgot about that. We only hear it once a year though - it's not llike it's a normal conversation.

yes - i have used both words and it is standard here to use both. I mostly use fall though.

See that's a cultural saying because of your weather. We don't get fall weather like that - we have the "Winter blues" at least in some parts of the country. Indiana is much more dreary during the winter than NJ. In Oregon it just rains and rains and rains during the winter.

in oregon the rainy season besically starts in October and goes to about May or June - then June/July - September it's draught.

Different culture, seasons and life experiences affect a language. That is why we say fall.
