ok, maybe it was me, but i dunno. i know it was definitely she who introduced me to Nora Roberts, but we are getting insanely off-topic here. has anyone here read the Gates of Sleep? that would be the new one?

Mercedes Lackey is good to read if you want something quite easy. Admittedly she doesn't compare to Tolkein, but come on, who does? The books are easy to concentrate on, which is good when you've been revising for an hour.
(Sorry - little stressed out - my exams start next week )

Does anyone know where I can get copies of the Last Herald Mage Trilogy? I've beem looking for ages but cant find them.

I have two of the Last Herald Mage books. 1st and last. I'd send them to you if I could. . .but you should be able to find them at bookstores. Oh, and welcome to the moot!

Welcome to the Moot, Garina! yeah, you should be able to find them at any Barnes and Noble or Borders, at least you can around here (Boston). Or you could get them on Amazon.com.

I liked those books (last herald mage). They were nice when I wanted to read something easy to concetrate on, and depressing.

Yeah, they were kind of depressing, weren't they? oh well. not everyone can write perfectly happy, carefree, joyful, fun to read books all the time, you know, Eruviel.

You misinterpreted what I said. Sometimes I like reading a nice, depressing book. I was not being sarcastic,(except for the smiley) and sometimes I prefer the sad books anyway. Those ones for example. And sometimes I can't stand cheerful, carefree, happy books. Hey, I love LotR, right?

Not that this is necesarily bad, but they were kind of 'issues' books. . .brought up all these issues and sometimes it feels like the purpose of the book is to discuss them. Which is fine, I suppose. Maybe that's why I liked them; I agreed with the stance M. L. took on the issues and I understood a lot of what Vanyel was going through.

Although Vanyel's character kinda annoyed me sometimes. I mean, he was so whiney! Oh well. . .I'm not complaining, really!

oh. oops. *is feeling rather stupid now* well, it was the smiley. i'm sorry for misinterpreting your post, so just ignore what i said, k?

and yeah, i know what you mean about happy carefree books. they make me want to SCREAM and throw something. on the other hand, there are books (like LotR, and King of Shadows, by the author of the Dark is Rising series, name escapes me) that have so many different threads going at the same time that seem to be going nowhere, with a really depressing plot (well, not necessarily), and then the author manages to tie all the threads up together at the end, leaving you with a really satisfied feeling. Mercedes Lackey is a good author, but she doesn't have that quality. So i guess, that would make her more of a mediocre author with some good storytelling skills, but not a true "good author". (that last sentence was very grammatically incorrect, i know. *shrug*)

It's alright, TC, don't worry 'bout it. I know, it was that smiley. . .I was rolling my eyes at myself though.

I don't think I've read a Mercedes Lackey book in a long time, though I think the last one I read was Magic's Pawn.

thanx for the welcome!

unfortunately i couldn't find them on Amazon.
and i dont think we have those bookshops in england. oh well i will just keep looking

yeah the books do get rather depressing - someone always seems to die near the end. although by the sword (Kerowyn's Tale) is one that doesn't, and is quite funny. i seem to like depressing books for some reason - maybe i should try to work out why!

oh gods, Carafin, don't get TwirlingString started on Ranma 1/2!!! please! go over to the Ranma 1/2 thread she started, just not here!!! please, i really don't want to be driven sane!!!

yes, Carafin, there is a series that started with the Firerose; they're not about the same characters but they have the same general type of thing, with the Elemental Masters. Different plots (duh!), etc. The only ones i know of at the moment are:

The Firerose
The Serpent's Shadow
and the newest one, The Gates of Sleep

i have only read the first two of these, myself, but i found them to be exceptional. enjoy them!

that sucks, Garina, i'd send you my copy but i doubt you'd want to give out your address to someone you met online! just keep hunting for them, you'll find them eventually!

Agreed on all points. Kerowyn is definitely NOT the way she is portrayed on the cover!!! on that topic, has anyone else noticed that they got the eye color wrong on 2 of the 3 Vows and Honor books? i think the only one they got right was Oathblood, the anthology of Tarma and Kethry stories. *shrug*

I used to like Mercedes Lackey books, I started reading them mainly so that I could understand what Tano and Eruviel and the rest of our friends were talking about and ended up with the entire series from the Gryphons to The storms on my book shelf M.L is an okay author, she isn't the best I've ever read but she certainly isn't the worst. And the cover art on By the Sword is indeed bad to point where it's laughable.

First of all, it's ugly. Second of all, it's impractical. Third of all, the artist must have been blind and/or stoned when he/she/it designed that!
