I had a beautiful orange long haired cat named Pippin Took. Fit him to a tee, as he was frequently mischievious, like a good meal, and always off on adventures. One adventure nearly cost him his life, as he was hit by a truck, and lost one of his huge green eyes. That never seemed to slow him down though. He continued for many good years, prowling around the fields and forests with his one eye (which glowed eerily at night) Geesh, what a great cat. And, when his time came to pass into the Grey Havens, I shouldn't have been surprised that he was the first cat in the area to succomb to feline AIDS. He was a good boy, and have not had a pet like him since.

I've always thought that Meriadoc and Peregrin are the coolest names in LotR. But I don't think my husband would be too thrilled with the prospect of naming our sons that. o_0;; Oh well...

I really like some of the female names in the book, and most of the male names as well. My alias, aka my screenname, Laurelyn, didn't originate from Tolkien, but when I later read the Silmarillion I realized that it was just Laurelin, spelled differently. I didn't, however, intend that. Actually, Laurelyn isn't my real name. My real name's Laura.
But my little brother's two fish are named Laurelin and Telperion . . .

A lot of cool names there in the book, I must agree. Although there are a few that get weird once you start making up nicknames:
Mithrandir ->Randy - this is ok except maybe for Brits Gandalf----->Gandi - Legolas----->Lassie (ok, but opposite sex) or Lego - "Hey didn't I tell you to clean up your Lego's Lego?" I think I'll name my future son Saruman a.k.a. Sharky

I like the name Elanor, and I've liked Sam even before I read LOTR. But, I wouldn't name by kid anything like Arwen or Mithrandir, even though they are more interesting than Mary and John. My kids (if I have any in the DISTANT future) would hate me

beautiful names
I love the Quenya and Sindarin languages and would love to name my kids something beautiful. There are such delicate sounds and poetic meanings in the names. Just have to convince my hubby!
I have a fondness for Estel as a middle name. Love the idea of "hope" - something we all need at various times in life.

I'd like my kids to have long winded titles like Aragorn did.
That be pretty funny if he had to announce that wherever he went.

Names
I agree, Uinen, Estel would make a great middle name. In English it seems that we are short of iambic names and they work well with most surnames, especially if the first name is trochaic. I looked and looked for those second syllable accented names when I was naming my own Children and settled on Elaine, Elisha, and Elizabeth. Their third names however ( I like lots of names, ok?) were rather more down to earth (lots of family names to carry on) Now that I think of it, Elizabeth could have been Estel...well Estelle maybe...
Other names I wouldn't mind naming children are: Rian, Arien,(from the Silmarillion) and Lorien. Unfortunately, my children are too old to name...maybe grandchildren. If I start plotting now maybe I can infuse the idea into the right brains.

i like the star names! and you don't have any worries about naming your child after a character with an unfortunate fate. if you called your kid denethor, i bet he'd be an arsonist... ok that was a pretty tasteless joke
i like alcarinque "the glorious", elemmire "star jewel", sorunume, helluin, wilwarin "butterfly" and anarrima. pretty, eternal names. |
