Technically - in the US colleges offer a limited or specific curricullum. Universities offers graduate programs - whereas colleges do not - at least none that I know of. Colleges don't refer to small universities.

Princeton Univeristy when founded in 1746 used to be the College of New Jersey and was not part of a larger institution. It was not called Princeton University until about 100 - 150 years ago.

I know plenty of institutions with college in their name/title that have graduate programs. (Such as some where my dad has taught and some that I'm looking at).

Didn't another "College of New Jersey" start up in the past few decades? (completely unrelated to Princeton, but they want to be associated with it because of their name).
