While it may be true that the publisher decided which two towers the title was referring to, Tolkien had his own ideas on this, as referred to in the Letters quotes I posted, so as far as I'm concerned, the question still remains unanswered.

I always thought of it as Orthanc and Cirth Ungol. Yes, I know, Cirth Ungol itself is not really a tower. But the place has one.

I think he will answer it in his 111th birthday come january. In order to find out what he will say, one must fall asleep at exactly midnight of that day while chanting the following incantation: "There's no place like Rivendell, There's no place like Rivendell, There's no place like Rivendell..."

Perhaps we should ask John Edward to contact him?

So, is Cirith Ungol named for the Ungoliant? hmmm... John?

He's a TV psychic. He uses promting and watches body language to evoke a simulated visitation from the dead relatives of audience participants. He's a fake, but a really good fake. It's entertaining for a minute or two.

You are lucky not to get his show "Crossing Over' in NZ. I watch it sometimes just to criticise everything he says. Cirdan, you quote is so true!

I saw a butal parody of him on South Park. I don't watch it very often but it came on after something while I was surfing. They pegged him as the biggest "euphemism" in the galaxy (he got an award from an alien).

I'm pretty sure it means Othanc and Barad-Dur.

It is only explicitly stated as Orthanc and Barad-dúr in the movie version; not the books.

My thoughts are Orthanc and the Tower at Cirith Ungol. (Was that Minas Morgul? I can't remember )

Return of the King; Book 2; Chapter 1: "The Tower of Cirith Ungol"

Cirith Ungol and Orthanc are the geographic centers for the climax of each book of TTT.

The conspiracy of Barad-dur and Orthanc are the focus of the storyline in TTT.

Which is more significant?

I think that it is Barad-Dur and Orthanc.
although the storyline is mainly focused on the other two towers- look at how the whole story was affected by the two tower of the dark lord and Saruman-the company broke up because sarumans orks attacked with Saurons and the company changed its origanal course ext.

my god talk about much ado about nothing. i think its obvious the focus in the second book is on the developing relationship between saruman and sauron. so of course the two towers probably are Barad-Dur and Orthanc since this is where they both dwell and this is where the focus of their power comes from. the eye and the hand. its just silly to read any more into it or say its about a guard tower or something. those are chapter titles.
