Re: Helloo
First of all, I can't supply a numbered list because some films just can't be compared against each other, and there would also be way too many ties.
Secondly, my "favorite" list is separate from my "best" list... here come my favorites in a VERY approximate order. Raiders of the Lost Ark Singin' in the Rain All the Star Wars films The Good, the Bad and the Ugly Casablanca The Big Sleep The Maltese Falcon Bridge on the River Kwai The Wizard of Oz West Side Story Fiddler on the Roof Ah, hell, too many. I'm giving up. |

Re: I forgot to add these....
I make these lists all the time for fun, and they are usually huge - e.g. my 50 favorite muscials of 1940-1945. Well, here goes:
1. The Awful Truth. 2. Vertigo. James Stewart as a necrophiliac. 3. Singin' in the Rain. 4. The Adventures of Robin Hood. 5. The Searchers. Surprise - John Wayne can act. 6. It's a Wonderful Life. 7. Yankee Doodle Dandy. 8. The Maltese Falcon. 9. The Best Years of Our Lives. 10. Margie. Jeanne Crain loses her underwear 3 times in this film from 1946. 11. The Thin Man. Lucky guy that Nick Charles. 12. Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. 13. Athena. Jane Powell as a New-Age weirdo circa 1953 - must be seen to be believed. 14. All That Money Can Buy. 15. Laura. 16. Johhny Belinda. The first Mrs. Reagan as a deaf-mute. 17. Pillow to Post. 18. The Wind. Lillian Gish - words fail. 19. It Happened One Night. 20. My Man Godfrey. Convulsive laughter - nearly killed me. |

I've seen RAN I've yet to see the 7, when i get back to the states I wanna check it out. BUT I didn't know they were a trilogy. I assume Toshiro Mifune was the same character in all 3? I can't name all my favorites because the older I become my taste changes. There are many films posted here that as a youth I thought were great but I've watched recently and thought what utter lite fluff. I NOW tend to like films that contain some of the following elements: serious, intellectual, original, dark, gritty, realistic or have a certain Euro or art house feel. The key word above is tend. I would say off the top of my head:] The Professional (AKA Leon and the Perfect Assassin overseas) Once were Warriors Momento Farewell My Concubine Too Live ( AKA Life Times) LA Condifential Gladiator Braveheart The starwars movies ( just the parts with the bad guys, the saber duels and asteroid field) Guildenstern and Rosencrantz are Dead The FIRST 20 min of Saving Private Ryan Too tired to think of anything else now.

I can't believe people actually *like* the Phantom Menace . . . *groan* No offense, I've just seen that SO MANY TIMES, against my will and better judgment (it's my little brother's favorite movie) that the very name makes me want to retch!

Some good ones that haven't been mentioned yet:
Bottle Rocket … as I've said elsewhere, everyone needs a friend like Dignan: unbridled enthusiasm coupled with absolute cluelessness. Think Don Quixote in a lawn care jumpsuit. Rushmore … I identified with Max Fisher all too well, and Bill Murray portrays middle-age disillusionment with more heart and empathy than a lot of Oscar winners could muster. Wonder Boys … more great middle-age disillusionment and aimlessness, this time from Michael Douglas. This is Spinal Tap, Waiting for Guffman, and Best In Show … I'll watch Christopher Guest mockumentaries for as long as he makes 'em. Unbelievably funny stuff. So I Married an Axe Murderer … if there's anything funnier than Charlie's mad Scottish father ranting against Colonel Sanders (or browbeating "Heed"), then I have yet to see it. Wag the Dog … caveat: I find it harder to be cynical about government post-9/11, and believe me, this movie is incredibly cynical about government. However, it's also hilarious dark satire. The Great Race … long, ludicrous, and just plain fun. Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk are likeable bumbling villains, Tony Curtis is the annoyingly perfect hero, and Natalie Wood is a dedicated (and beautiful) suffragette. They all compete in a turn-of-the-century race (almost) around the world. Casablanca … sad, romantic, perfect. OK, so a few others mentioned this too, but I just had to agree. The English Patient … more doomed romance in Africa. I still maintain that this is not a chick flick. Someone back me up on this … anyone … ? Clue … slapstick squared, plus a great cast. And Colleen Camp in a French maid uniform: ooo la la. North By Northwest … cool, funny, unpredictable spy thriller from Alfred Hitchcock. Rear Window … there's so much going on in this movie (surface plot as well as underlying themes) that I won't begin to synopsize it. Oh, and by the way: can I go back — á lÃ* Somewhere in Time — and romance Grace Kelly, circa 1954? I'm in love. …Too many more to list, and it's way past my bed time. (For the record, I'm not a total wuss. I like kick-ass action as much as the next guy. However, most of my favorite action/scifi/fantasy picks were already listed, so I thought I'd throw out some alternatives.) |

How could I have forgotten?
Trekkies!!! Actually a documentary, this is one of the funniest things you'll ever see. If you're a Trekkie/Trekker ("I usually try to avoid the whole debacle") as well as a Rings enthusiast, you'll be glad to know that, most likely, you're not as "out there" as some. If you're not a Trek fan (as for myself, I respect the shows, but I never made a point of watching regularly), then Trekkies will make you literally cry with laughter. To its credit, the film doesn't take cheap shots or merely make fun of — um — "dedicated" fans. It also presents how much the show has meant to many around the world. Watch it if you can find it … it beats any of that "reality TV" trash hands down. Last edited by Churl : 01-12-2002 at 02:07 AM. |
