IT'S HERE!!!
Just been down at a dark, dark beach doing a bit of gazing- Taitung hot summer nights, whole families with their kids lying around in the park at midnight. They say it's not any brighter than normal to the naked eye but, hey, last time was 60,000 years ago. Canals, dry ocean beds, ancient dying civilisations... A big wave to John Carter, Valentine Michael Smith and all the rest of the gang.

It's been solid overcast all month for me and so I've not been able to see anything.
........someone said they thought they saw "golden arches" in the northern hemisphere.

I have heard reports from the news that it will (would have) been better than I thought it would be......
I heard that you could see the surface with even a small telescope (which I don't have). I was going to take a look - too bad that this whole week it has been very cloudy Sorry if I seemed to earlier in this topic be against astronomy - no, I enjoy looking up at the stars, its just that 90% of the time to me, every time they say stuff like this it ends up being almost nothing. Like this......because its been very very cloudy - can't see a single star.

Well, I personally find it to be pretty amazing that the last time Mars passed this close, it was during the phase of Homo sapiens neanderthalensis. I wonder if they even noticed the small red speck in the sky?

Mars has loomed very large and bright and red, low in our southeast sky, every evening for quite some time. Everyone in the family notices it! Since we live rural, the stars and planets put on a good display....still, Hale Bop (wasn't that the name of the comet in the late 90's) has been my favorite celestial object!

Saw it at its closest last night, had an accident and didn't get to look at it for long. No, I did not pee my pants
Anyway, I think it will remain visable for the next 3-4 nights, and then will only be visable early mornings (?) must remember to get the telescope out again.
