Interesting thread, though I don't think I have enough knowledge to join myself. But it surely is fun to watch! And it makes me want to study art. Go on, enlighten me.

I'm not a big fan of neoclassicism myself, but my mum likes Socrates.

Is it 15th century Flemish? (I feel like I'm on Jeopardy -"I'll take Paintings for 500." "For 500; who painted ---- ?" "Um, what is... a 15th Century Flemish artist?"

nope... I'll give a hint since this thread has been so quiet, and I'm guessing sun star won't mind: think English painters, and one of the greatest who ever lived, imho

Not exactly... You're right about the 15th century, Lotesse, but the artist was Italian. I guess this won't help as a clue, but I posted it because it's in the Ashmolean here in Oxford

wow, I could have sworn that was a Turner....
edit: wait a minute... did you have a different pic up earlier? I just took another look at it and I truly remember a street scene with a golden sky that felt very Turner-ish Last edited by Hasty Ent : 10-23-2005 at 05:18 PM. |

Anyway, the picture I posted was Uccello's "The Hunt". Since you knew the Turner, Hasty Ent, why don't you go next? It was this, by the way:

you got it, sun-star
Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket After viewing it Ruskin wrote: 'I have seen, and heard, much of Cockney impudence before now; but never expected to hear a coxcomb ask two hundred guineas for flinging a pot of paint in the public's face.' Whistler sued him for libel. More info on Ruskin v. Whistler here http://www.tate.org.uk/britain/exhib...rmonet/wvr.htm |

Is is a Delacroix, Eugene Delacroix? It definitely looks romanticist. I love her face.

Definitely pre-Raphaelite, but not Burne-Jones...

Dante Gabriel Rossetti! (what was I thinking to say "Burne-Jones?")
still can't recall the title, although I've seen and admired the painting many times |
