Oh man what a confused assignment!
There were two ways to approach history back then, the approach favored by journalism is the one used by Thucydides in the Peloponesian Wars. The other approach, which was much more popular and favored by most of the writers of the Bible, was the colorful, anecdotal, Herodotan style. It sounds like someone trying to create a realism where there was none, and that's the core error in literal/fundamental readings, IMO. They want to turn it into newspapers, which just strips the beauty right out of the legend. my 2 cents - sorry

I doubt we're talking serious biblical exegisis-it sounds more like a writing and comprehension exercise.
