The Uruk-Hai were bred to be stronger and different to other orcs - not affected by daylight etc. They were also sometimes referred to as half-orcs in the books, so they've obviously been mixed with soemthing else

The Moria orcs were a lot shorter than Men, and the orcs in the prologue were a lot shorter than the elves in the last alliance (but then elves are tall anyway...)

Its a movie from the early 80's. A classic dark horror with comic undertones and a great soundtrack. An American Werewolf in London

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Half-Orcs are something entirely different from Uruks; 'men with goblin-faces' I think they are described as in the books.

I think that other then Uruks, all orcs were considerably shorter then Men, which would include the ones in Moria.

Theres a nice sketch of races sizes for the movie in the book 'art of the fellowship of the ring' if anyone saw it...it was kinda interesting. But yeah, I think all the orcs were smaller than men.

A Nigglers Note;

The Uruk-Hai were not, in the books, the same things as half orcs. The Uruk-Hai were bred by sauron, and they were simply a larger, hardier race of orcs who were acclimated to life aboveground.

The Half-Orcs that were interbred with the dunlendings were in many cases able to pass as men. The squinty-eyed-southerner in bree is an example, as are the ruffians in the scouring of the shire. They were larger than orcs, but they were not the steroidal monstrosities that were shown in the film, they would have been humans with an orc like cast to their features.

But in the movie I'm pretty sure that Gandalf ( i think it was gandalf) says somethign like "Saruman has crossed orcs with goblin-men (the half-orcs, I assumed) that can travel at great speed in daylight" or something like that... don't have the dvd handy so I can't check.

My earlier post is pretty confusing now that I re-read it sorry bout that

I thought that the Wargs would be big bad wolves.

*starts to hum "who's afraid of the big bad wolf"*

....... And I also thought Shadowfax would be HUGE and white and sparkly. Kind of.

But I thought that the Uruk-Hai's would be bigger then men, and that they would be pretty gormless, and only obey their commands. Oops!

I never really had a good mental picture of the wargs.. somewhat like wolves but really dark gray.. and bigger. but that was it.

as for the Uruk-Hai, they were supposed to be "man-high" and look like a cross between men and orcs. i thought they did. but the orcs were to slimy.

this is kinda stupid, but i always thought that orcs kinda sent out spores and the spores fell into orcy breeding holes and new orcs popped outa the mud. after all you never see any female orcs.

Didn't Tolkien write somewhere that Elves and Orcs "breed the same way"? *Tries to imagine baby Elrond falling out of a mud hole* o_O

The concept of Elrond as a baby is hard enough...

Welcome to the Moot Edro! My mental image of Wargs is similar to yours, and also a bit fuzzy. My Wargs certainly did not look like motley, defective hyenas though.

I was not too keen on Jackson's version of wargs but I thought all the various types of orcs were dead-on perfect. One of the best things he did was give us a number of different types of orcs rather than having all of them look alike. I hated the pig-snouted orc clones of Bakshi's film version.

But, he always does that, or maybe he's a she. Any ways I thought the wargs looked like bears. The first time I saw them I thought they were bears! Anyone agree?

That's a she. At least, I think so. If it's samwise of the shire, it's a she. If it's Dunadan, then I believe it's a he.

Nope, didn't like the Wargs- Wargs should be wolves, not hyenas.

Also, they seemed to move too fast; the horses seemed greatly outclassed- it made the victory of the Rohirrim look unrealistic.

No, it isn't. Please learn a bit before making assumptions. The
Wargs were MOST un-Wargish. They may have been 'cool monsters' (which IMO they weren't, particularly), but they were not Wargs.

In the Hobbit, "wolves" and "Wargs" is used interchangebly for the Warg-ish breed of wolf.

Wow that was a pointless post.
