The Middle-Earth Astronomy Riddle

I'm first and last.
I'm new and old.

I'm day and night
together, it's told.

Good luck with this one, O Riddlers of Entmoot!

I was kind of impressed too... it just hit me, all of a sudden.

Note: When you're overwhelmed by the huge possibilities of a riddle, start by thinking of specific instances in the books you know best. It just might turn out to be one of those.. and if not, you can rule those out.

Once again you have reasoned it out from the clues and references given in the riddle. I am very impressed with you, Midge. Well done!

( For those interested this riddle was sourced from the very first page of LOTR. In the Prologue you will find it. In the section titled Concerning Hobbits ).

I have a new riddle just about ready for you guys to twist yer brains over. Fresh from my riddling room. Stay tuned...
I wasn't sure if you wanted more than this, like, the name of the craftsman or where he was located or something. I didn't know that.

I dunno about unisex. You are the first Midge I have ever encountered. In the U.S. "wise-guy" is a common response to sarcasm regardless of gender. (It is also a slang term for a member of organized crime. You know, mafia types etc.).

Anyway, welcome and well met, Midge! I hope you will continue to riddle with us in here!

Often it takes a group effort to get to the bottom of a Keith K riddle. Or any riddle for that matter. Sometimes the wrong guess of one riddler will set the light bulb off in the head of another... Anyway, guess early and often and the answer will come eventually. When all else fails the riddle creator can always help with an extra clue or two. (but you guys mostly want to figure it out without help, right????)

No shoemaker is named in LOTR to the best of my knowledge. I only sought the generic term that you have given. Again, very well done!

Riddle On, all ye Riddlers!

I am from the U.S. I just don't normally hear "wise guy" applied to girls. They usually get "smarty-pants" or something similar to it.

I know this: I am NOT a member of organized crime!

I like riddles when I can figure them out, or when they're clever! You have some quite good ones!

For instance, your astronomy riddle-- I have NO clue!

While we're off-topic, let me honestly say I never thought it was your name, but rather a reference to the insects in the marshes in FotR.

Actually it's a reference to my height, which isn't actually that much.

Digressing... I guess I'd better guess...

Going for the obvious: it's not Earendil?

Maybe the name Midge itself is a riddle about her gender. If Midge refers to the mosquitoes then she must be female, because with mosquitoes it's the females you've got to watch out for, as they're the stinging kind.

You're right! It's not Earendil.

Anyway, that's a good beginning. It gives me an opportunity to tell you that the answer is NOT a person. (Although it has a person in it... sort of... )

Also, It is not a place or even an actual physical thing. It's more like an occurrence. Yeah, that's it. Think of it as a kind of event. That's the key to unlock this particular poser.

The day and night together bit, along with the 'astronomy' angle are the best places to start with this riddle.

That is to be expected with this particular riddle. Even I could not figure this one out with so little said in it. This one will require help which I will try to dole out sparingly as y'all close in on the answer.

Yay! I'm a riddle! Not a Riddle, though... That'd be either scary or unfortunate.

Okay. Compiling clues to the Astronomy Riddle, which goes as follows:

We know it:

a. is not a person (esp. Earendil)
b. contains a person
c. is an occurrence
d. probably has something to do with a KEY and UNLOCK, due to Keith K's
emphasizing those words.

Anybody got any inspiration?

A noble try, NEL. This "occurrence" occurs much less frequently than does twilight which occurs every day. It does fit some of the clues that Midge has gathered together for y'all, and shows that you are thinking.

I do hope you will try again.

Hello Ilfirin, welcome to the Riddling Thread. Thank you for participating! It is not the Music, which is a good guess. In a historical sense, the solution to the riddle is something that occurs AFTER the Children of Eru appeared in the world.

Keep trying.

That is a helluva guess, NEL. In certain ways an eclipse can be made to fit all of the clues. It is not the correct answer, but is moving in the right direction with the alignment of heavenly bodies angle.

Here is another clue for y'all. The solution to this riddle is calandarial* in context, (although it would not likely appear on your average monthly calendar ).

*Okay, so I took the liberty of inventing a new word. Live with it!

This's probably wrong because it doesn't fit all the extra clues, but what about 'history'? It starts from the very first second to the last and spans day after night, old and new. It most certainly holds everything that is told.

Hello there Earniel, my longtime riddling friend! Thanks for giving the Astronomy Riddle a go. It is not a generalized term like history that I seek. It is very specific to Tolkien.

Keep thinking, and try again. Y'all will narrow it down eventually.

Riddle On!

Thanks.

With what meager knowledge of the Elven langs I have... it includes light?
