Wouldn't putting them out in January be more to the point?

Hehe, no. It's related to the Sinterklaas thing. Kids place their shoes (well, one of them) near a chimney or something similar. Then at night Sinterklaas comes in through the chimney or if you don't have one through unidentifiable other means and gives you a present in your shoe. But only if you sang a song before going off to bed. And NO PEEKING!
And usually you put a carrot in your shoe for the horse of Sinterklaas, called Amerigo.

Question: why January? Is there something special about shoes and January?

Hector! *jumps at Hector with a smile radiating from her face*
Too bad about the homework. believe me I know what you're going through. Just keep in mind: almost Christmas!!! Christmas = vacation! (Right?)

Anyway, have a drink on me, relax for a bit. Need a massage? Recover from the strain I put on your back by jumping you?

In many Spanish speaking countries the empty shoe is put out for the Eve of Epiphany.

I think you're just confused on the dates, up in the Netherlands.

Nah, I'm sure our tradition is original I'm very proud of this particular tradition. I even volunteered to give a presentation on it in Japanese class when I was in Japan. I know I know, overkill, but still I like this one.
Don't you go messing with my Sinterklaas!!!

Just trying to be helpful. I'm concerned about your empty shoe.

Sure you aren't confused on dates, up there overseas? 6 december is the day for ol' Saint Nic. But I suppose the Spanish tradition makes sense. In Belgium (and I suppose in the Netherlands too) Sinterklaas comes by boat from Spain, gives out gifts at night and leaves. So he should be back in January in Spain, right in time to fill the shoes over there.

You probably didn't put out a treat for the horse. Or maybe he thinks you're still in Japan and hasn't updated his book yet.

Well, I don't know where he's looking, but he sure ain't trying to find it. It's kinda hard to miss a shoe my size... Did he manage to find yours?

All this talk of shoes and feet made me want to use the footbath with massage and bubble function!!! *prepares the bath and sits down to let her feet get all wrinkly* Ahhh, this is the life!
Not that I'm supposed to have time for this though.
Aww man! I forgot to put a soda and some pretzels within reach! Now I have to either get up or forget about it... fine. I'll do without them!

He did. The morning of the 6th I found a nice book on the celtic tribes (you know, those famous 'old belgians that never quite existed ), a chocolate figurine and a bag of cookies.
