from The Fellowship of the Ring:
Quote:
" 'You cannot pass,' he said. The orcs stood still and a silence fell. 'I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udun. Go back to the Shadow. You cannot pass!' "
What does Gandalf mean by the words “the secret fire”?

It's not really too hard Radagast, but it does require some thought. There are two possible answers to this, one is more logical.

I had assumed that this was a reference to Iluvatar's Flame Imperishable that Melkor was seeking in the early part of the Sil. If so, Gandalf is saying he is a servant of Iluvatar. And he wouldn't be the first warrior to think that God is on his side.

Bravo, Gorthol.

(Diamond of Long Cleeve is rather too fancy a name for a hobbit, isn't it).

Usually they are named after flowers, (e.g., Lobelia, Elanor) but I think a gem might also be fitting-- depends on the hobbit.

Good question. I can only think of five, but perhaps that will help someone else:

Treebeard, Quickbeam, Fimbrethil, Skinbark, Beechbone.

Bingo! I thought the tricky one was going to be the Entwife, Wandlimb (Fimbrethil), but you had gotten that on the first try.

I was begining to lose hope in you guys. This is an ENTmoot after all.

Yes, I was tempted to say Gorthol, Diamond and Sister Golden Hair

OK. Name, in chronological order, all those who held the One Ring (including those who held it only briefly).

You forgot Isildur (after Sauron), and Gollum at the very end.
