8.4, 8.11, 10.0... your post got too statistical right there
Congrats on passing!

Lol, that must require some really cute minuscule electrodes

Knowledge is power, but can the revelation that the fungus alters the frogs' salt balances (rather than suffocating them) be of any help to the frogs in practice?

Congrats Mari! Great score! I never was good at statistics, but somehow they ended up being half of my job...

Congrats, Tessar! Sounds like you've got yourself some fans besides us.

At this point, none yet, I think. Especially considering that experiments in which they artificially raised the level of electrolytes, didn't lead to survival. (Which makes me think, there may yet be some other process involved, but the article doesn't mention anything in that direction.)

You can't battle any disease if you don't know what it does. So with this discovery, scientists will hopefully now have a meaningful direction to focus their research in. And there are frog-species that are imune to the fungus (including that most adorable one that makes its own sunscreen.) Research is still ongoing in what makes them imune, it would be interesting to see how their electrolyte balance evolves under infection.

I just started playing a little while ago, and they've played a lot more, and I FINALLY beat one of the little buggers!

I'm happy because I actually did really well . I made it into the top 12 out of 29 students in my category. I don't know my official ranking, because they don't tell you, but I made it into the simi finals and only 12 of the 29 singers did . I think I probably ranked close to the top 5, but I didn't quite make it into the final round.

Considering that I'm still sick, I'll absolutely take it. I learned a lot by doing the competition.

I am so freaking excited it's Friday. Tomorrow is going to be busy, BUT I don't have to get up by 7 a.m.... I can sleep in a little. It's going to be heavenly.

I'm still so exhausted from NATS... hardcore stress and competition mode from Wednesday to Saturday night, then aaaaaaaaaaall day Sunday spent driving home and catching up on homework, then back to the grind Monday till now.

I've been asked to play Zwarte Piet around Sinterklaas Day (december 5th)!
I'd love to, though my participation depends on a few practical matters.
Funny thing is: I was just thinking the other day I would like to do this some time!
Better go practice my cartwheel and Sinterklaas songs...

(The black people are Zwarte Pieten)

Ohoo! Time to break out the lighters and the wine corks? (At least that's how we at school usually turned the entire last year into Zwarte Pieten.)

I'm glad we weren't required to do cartwheels, though.

I'm sure I'm not required either, but I would like to be able to do it. In fact, when I was young I was very good at it.

I second that! You're still young Mari. Compared to me, everyone's young (except for Ingwe, who is actually older)

Oh PLEASE . You're one to talk. 27? Most opera singers careers are just getting started when they're 27. Don't talk like 27 is old.

lol well...it's not always how young you are or how young you look, for me it comes down to how ancient I feel. If I'm only as old as I feel, then chances are, I was put in the ground 60 years ago.

Eh, being young can be over-rated. The older I get, the more seriously people take me - even if it's with the same things I've been saying for years.

Unfortunately, I'm not yet old enough to be able to say 'when I was young...' and have it not sound absurd. Unless I'm talking to my class of 6 year olds, one of whom asked me in all seriousness if I went to school during the Victorian era.

I'm happy today. I found out that the grade on my first essay (the one I was obsessing about in the venting thread about a month ago) was misreported, and I actually did better than I had been told.

Also, I have new (well, second-hand, but new to me) books.
