I don't know about "swift," as I constantly get error messages when I try to log on, having left out an "i" in Ithilien , but "speedy" is OK. So . . . Z-O-O-O-O-O-O-M: In Bilbo's front hall at Bag End is the door bell itself closer to the clock or to the umbrella stand?

Rephrased question, if acceptable to everybody, with a clue: Where exactly is the doorbell itself located in Bilbo's front hall, if one is standing in the hall facing the front door? (Hint: It's not "close to the clock" or "far from the umbrella stand.") |

If one is standing in the hall and facing the front door, the doorbell is hanging from the cieling on the right hand side. Is that the answer you were looking for?

Hmmm--perhaps he's been nabbed by River Elves and roped into an unwanted journey downstream. May it not be a long one!
In the meanwhile pending his return, I suppose it defaults back to me again. No illustrations this time, I promise. This sounds like a wise question but isn't: How many dwarves does it take to cross an enchanted stream? |

That reminds me of a joke...
How many dwarves does it take to change a lightbulb? It depends how high the ceiling is!!!! Ok, that's not very good. It takes one to spot the boat and eleven to cross tje river carrying the twelfth. (If it's the river in Mirkwood, if it's a normal river it depends how deep the river is!!!)

I'm back from my journey downstream.
This is another good question that required some research, i.e., I had to look it up. Fili threw the rope; Kili and Oin and Gloin helped him to haul it back in; Balin stopped the boat from floating away in the current. Therefore if my count is correct, the answer is five.

Welcome back, barrelrider 110! Did you bring any goodies back?
This is a tough one to call. I counted six named in the book: 1 -- Fili to throw the hooks; 3 -- Kili, Oin and Gloin to haul the boat back (and collapse comically when it came loose); 1 -- unnamed by Fili, in the first lot that went over, to haul on the rope and bring them across; 1 -- unnamed by Fili but"one of the others" in the first lot to hook the second rope onto the boat so it could be hauled back. Of course, that wasn't the end of it logically. Correct me if I'm missing any steps in the process, but it would take another dwarf to haul the boat back, and either the same dwarf or another from the second group to then haul them across, which brings the count up to seven or eight. But then the process would have to be repeated for Dwalin and Bombur, adding another dwarf (we can probably safely assume Bombur didn't do any hauling), so we have eight or nine. I didn't count Balin's fending off the boat, as it wasn't an integral part of the process. Well, it's debatable, but will stick with six as the number clearly mentioned in the book. However, barrelrider110 is due a turn, so I'll bow out. Your go, sir! |

Thank you, M'Lady
Who first suggested to Thorin to share the treasure under the mountain with the lake men and elves?
