It probably doesn't help, but elevators are the safest form of transport (in terms of number of deaths per passenger journey). I used to be scared of them, probably after seeing The Omen II at too young an age; I can't remember when but suddenly one day I liked them. Probably when faced with the choice of walking up 13 floors..

I used to love flying, but as I get older I'm getting more nervous again. I still love it if I can see out the window, but need bicycle clips on my trousers if I can't and we're landing in a cross-wind. Funnily enough, earlier on this year my plane struck by lightning. Since then, I've been less afraid of flying. Weird.

Fear is the worst thing in itself. It makes us do irrational and dangerous things, like drive our kids to school, when it would be safer for them to walk, and buy guns for defence, which are more likely to kill you accidentally than an intruder. If you can recognise the difference between feeling fearful (and forgiving yourself for it) and the thing you're afraid of, you're halfway to conquering it.

I love flying. And strangely enough it isn't disconcerting when I look out the window. There was also this one time that I was about to fly in a seaplane up to San Juan island, and the pilot asked me to join him up front and sit in the copilot's seat. It was years ago, and I thought it was really cool that I got to sit next to the pilot, and I've liked planes ever since.
Ah the old aphorism, "There is nothing to fear but fear itself." I actually tend to agree. Life is here for the living, and death will come eventually, so why fear?

School probably won't kill you though.

I'm scared of heights. No, wait, actually what I'm scared of is falling...er, the sudden stop at the bottom. Falling forever wouldn't be so nice either.

If I'm inside something, looking out a window, I'm fine! Bridges are usually fine, too. But I hate standing on the edges of cliffs.

The weird thing about that particular fear is that I often go rock climbing.

My bio teacher loves to give us the real world and loves to ruin my promise to ACTUALLY be a good day, by telling my class of smallpox and how both getting the shot and not getting the shot can kill you. Though this is the truth and you should not live in some perfet little no problem world your whole life, ignoring what the truth is. But still he did not have to say one of us in the class was probably going to probably lose our life from the shot for preventing smallpox.

Lovely way to star a friday huh?

I believe your teacher was also wrong. As I understand it, the shot carries a 1/1,000,000 risk of death. So unless you have a million people in your class, I'd advise you not to worry about it!

Or am I wrong?

In that light, most of us Americans and people around the world are awful blockheads, and perhaps Saddam Hussein and Usama Bin Laden are the heroes! Because they certainly are hoping that our president isn't one in a million . . .

One can be one in a million in two ways now. Either the best person of a million, or the most unlucky of a million. If both are taken as the same, who is the villain?
