There is this classical piece which has been used in a sequence on Animal planet and now is used on a one-in-all toothpaste commericial (two people standing in an icecave throwing toothpaste on a canvas). It's very Vivaldiesk. If any knows what this piece is I would be grateful for info on it.

It is his major piece so I wouldn't be surprised if this particular piece had been taken from them.

how did the thread get so far down on the page? so sad.

my oboe cd didn't come yet. The latest possible arrival date was 4 days ago. I emailed the guy but he didn't write back. Emailed very nicely too if I may say so. oh well. Its only $4, and I don't want to go through that long process to get it back.

hmm...the organ at our church is dead. We had some wet lightning which melted everything together. But that's an excuse to get a new one!!!!!!

except we need money. I doubt insurance will give us much.

And the composer of the week is....drum roll please... J.S. Bach!

What think you of him, the grandmaster of music?

Bach is simply the greatest! I find his music flawless.

I usually listen a lot of his klavier music: the Goldberg Variations, the Six partitas, the six little partitas, the preludia, the Well Tempered Klavier... All performed by Glenn Gould, who I think is an awesome Bach player.

All Bach music is awesome, but the best for me is his St. Mathew's Passion. Simply overwhelming

Greatest hits? Who chose them? What would they be composed of?

Oh Hector....! Which is the best format for Berlioz recordings? I don't just mean best symphonies, and such, but also best conductors. I'm sure you've mentioned it a gazillion times, so once more won't hurt.

edited out the blonde comment

format? well, go with cd format, if thats what you mean!. best composers? lol, you mean, best conducors? lol...bit confused!

Hey what is this with Julia Roberts and Berlioz? two movies (three if I overlooked) with Berlioz and her!

Good Composers for Beginners

Berlioz

Mozart

Dvorak

Sibelius

Richard Strauss

Handel

Rachmaninov

Khachaturian

Tchaikovsky
( he was THE COMPOSER when I fell in love with classical. His music is what made me love classical the most, with his ballets and the 1812 overture...now I'm a bit more critical of him, and I feel guilty about that.)

Hector, sorry, brain fell out, and I lost it yesterday. I still can't find it though I suspect that it's down someone's pants. Anyway, I mean who is the best Hector Berlioz comductor in your opinion. I've already got a whole bunch of cool stuff but no berlioz.

My brain fell out too last night, or I would have figured out what you were talking about

Ok, The Great Berliozian conductors are

Sir Colin Davis. He conducted and recorded all the main Berlioz works last year with the London Symphony Orchestra.
I reccomend This Recording of the Berlioz Requiem, conducted by Davis. I've listened to a few berlioz requiems, and the Davis one is still the best.
Enter Charles Munch. His rendition of the Symphonie Fantastique is still considered the best, though the renditions by Riccardo Muti and Colin Davis are honorable competitors.

Enter John Eliot Gardiner, who (I think) is perhaps the greatest Berliozian of them all. With his Orchestra (they use period instruments!) ans his very talented Monteverdi choir, he brings out the best performances.
Reccomended recordings:
Harold in Italy (2nd symphonie)

L'Enfance du Christ

Yet another Fantastique

Messe Solennelle

Romeo and Julliet (symphonie)

Ok, if you ever see Berlioz/Dutoit, let me assure you, Mr Dutoit is a very fine conductor. But never never never get This version of The Requiem. It not only borders heresy, it is heresy!
But This version of Fantastique is not to bad, and quite a good deal, since along with it comes Lelio (A stage play/opera/symphony type thingie ), and Tristia; all very wonderful works (what by Berlioz isnt?).

Ok, thats a great list there for begginners. If you ever want to get into the Berlioz operas, well, they're all there. Davis conducts most versions.

I cant believe what a gem I've found.

Its almost entirely me!

Here
alot of what he says is biased. But then again, what wouldnt be when it come to musical tastes?
I would like to point out one subject he missed.
Rock doesnt inspire much imagination, its all formulatic and plastic.
but even the most formulatic stuff in classical still inspires imagination.

Would respectfully disagree. I assume the above statement is meant as your opinion ONLY?

After conferring with the BF on the merits of 'old' school conductors (munch et al), and the revolutionary conductor Gardiner (historical instruments), we'll probably go with the Munch recording. Actually, the BF wants to rashly spend more of his hard earned cash, so we'll probably get Gardiner as well.
