Perhaps not some people on this board, but afore mentioned statement holds true for many Americans, whether they mean to or no.

And besides, Gwai is more Russian than American. He doesn't count in the speak for yourself thing, we know they hate all forms of Royalty corrupt or no!

you know, sometimes you Americans have no respect for heritage or history or lineage.
When the majority of the population is descended from immigrants/slaves who were forced away from their heritage and had no way of keeping records as to their lineage, why and how should we?

It's good to know where one comes from, I don't think anyone would really disagree with that, but it isn't a primary cultural concern.

You know what they say though: "America is a big pot of melting people"

Anyway to that ideal heratige has taken a backseat...

And that's why alot of Americans (Includeing myself) don't care alot about heratige exept vagely "I'm part so-and-so and a quarder so-and-so"

Now oviasly to all of this there are many exeptions...

Merry christmas all the same!

No, you're thinking Oz. America is a melting pot. Which is not necessarily a good thing.

It's funny, my experience suggests the opposite. Many Americans are very keen to display their ancestry and prove they're related to someone famous or aristocratic, while every British person I've met who genuinely does have that kind of lineage would rather die than talk about it. My brother has a friend whose surname suggests he must be descended from a very well-known line of earls, but whenever people ask him he refuses even to explain how he's related to them. It's just not done here; I don't know about other "post-aristocratic" societies though.

Some Americans are, yes; that's why it was said that it was a tendency. But many and even I would say most Americans don't give a rat's @$$ about that sort of thing. To them, lineage and family history basically end with the people who first came over, if they go that far. Those Americans that do care about such things, however, if they are related to aristocrats or some other famous persons, tend to be proud about it.

lawn gnomes, eh? i've met a few of them... can't say as they've been the friendliest critters around o.O

ok, so here's some conversation:
what is everyone asking for fer Christmahanukwanzifus? (that's christmas/hanukah/kwanza/festivus! )

for christmas i'm asking for an iPod stereo (like speakers and whatnot) a gym membership and gift certificates to hot topic, VS, aeropastale (which counters the hot topic lolol), and iTunes

(oh and about twenty bazillion books including a new big fat dictionary and about twenty bazillion dvds including disney's sleeping beauty and my dinner with andre!)

I asked for a rain-coat (which we had to send back for a slightly smaller size... everything fit except for the fact that it was meant for someone massively overweight!!!), and a bunch of Loreena McKennitt sheet music for the piano/voice.

I might also get a new dress-jacket. But I want to be there when it's bought because my dad always buys those shapeless 'three piece' coats... With my height and figure I need to make sure it has the althletic (read: fitted) rib-cage cut. Which he never buys. >.<

I wasn't actually going to ask for anything, but my parents insisted so I went with it. The sheet music especially will be nice, and it'll be nice to have a jacket and a dress-coat that will actually fit me... the ones I own right now are too small.

My sister's getting me a Barbara Bonny CD (LOVE that woman's voice... probably one of my top 5 sopranos). And I have no idea what my oldest sister is getting me...

I bought myself the two Inheritance books (Eragon and Eldest), that new Robert Jordan book, an old computer game (it was on sale for $7.50... Diablo. I couldn't resist!!!!!), another fantasy book (by Elaine Cunningham), and two other books I can't remembe... all from halfprice. Then I felt really bad later when my parents were asking me what I wanted because I'd just bought it all for myself already...
