Hmm... Well, clearly the key is in the "And now I might as well give you back your gift." part... where on earth in all the books did someone ever receive a gift and try to give it back? *sigh* I'm lost. I'll take a stab in the dark - Beren?

It might be from the "Children of Hurin"-section in Unfinished Tales, rather than from the new book.
I wonder if Turin is the one being spoken to - but answering that might be giving a hint (I still can't remember the name of the other person in the conversation I'm thinking of) ...

Oh, yeah, I 'd forgotten there was a bit about Turin in the UT. I know it's a really good story, but it's so depressing, sometimes I wonder how on earth Tolkien had the desire to keep writing it. I'd rather have heard more about Tuor...
Wasn't there some guy who lost a leg and was a servant of Turin's family or a nanny or something and Turin had given him this really weird nickname like Turkey or Toka or something (obviously it wasn't that, but it was similar)... If that's who you're thinking of Varna, I'll let you guess him (you can try to think of his name if you want). If not, then I'll guess him. This is kind of like Quote Game Poker - a game of chance for me at this point.
