Yeah, my room was tropical as well, and I couldn't leave the window open because of the blasted mosquitos. Last count showed 12 bites. It's fortunate that I can sleep pretty well under warm conditions.
But riding the train is this weather is murder. I pity the people who were stuck in the train yesterday. What a day to have technical difficulties and have people stuck in a hot train for an hour! And the thing is that you're never allowed to leave the train for 'safety issues' when it's stuck for god knows how long, and you're just left to cook inside. Yeah, I can guess how uncomfortable it must have been.

You don't have a 'hor' or 'klamboe'? We have a 'hor' on all windows and screens for every door. I'd go as far as calling it the invention of the millennium... almost

It's one of the best of humanity's inventions, no argument there!
But I don't have a hor for my bedroom window. Because I'd use it so rarely, as with yesterday's exceptional weather, I never got around to making one to size of my window.

That's a Dutchism, I'm afraid. A sort of panel with a fine net that can be put in in window- or door openings to keep insects out but allows fresh air. Neither of us can remember the English counterpart, it seems.

Went kayaking on Saturday. Most of the time, people watch me and laugh, saying, "Hey, watch out for that rock! Oh, too late! Watch out for that log! Never mind! Hey! There's a bank you can run into!"
But on Saturday, after running into stuff for a few hours, I figured out the magic of leaning when you turn the kayak, and I got into a pace, and I felt... (dare I say it?) ... ATHLETIC. Whoa. This is a major breakthrough for me. Plus my brother has been whomping my rear at Words with Friends (scrabble) on his new iPhone... so maybe everything is just getting all evened out. I didn't know he had words like "hae" and "dux" in his lexicon. And they have to be real words if the app is allowing them, right? The only definition I could find for "hae" was "how scottish people say 'have'" or "how slangy Internet/txting people write 'hey'". Nothing concrete. Perhaps we need a rambling thread...

We just call those "window screens" in Amurica. I don't know if they have a special name in other English speaking parts of the world. |

That's it. I'll have to remember window screens in the future.

Those words are probably from the British National Corpus, which is a huge collection of sentences and texts, cataloguing all sorts of words. Hae has 42 mentions. Not a lot, but enough not to be super extremely rare. Aside from Scottish connotations, it's an old English word. Read Dickens >_<

gotta liven up this happy thread... it looks so sad that far down.
most of the time we do work here at the field station... but sometimes we do other things, like collect bones. and with some of those bones, we've been making jewellery: the 2 top ones are made from the vertebrae of the common eider (<i>Somateria mollissima</i>) and the ear ring is made out of the vertebrae of some kind of fish. we'll be all blinged up by the end of the field season.

I'm happy because it's weekend. No more cleaning for 2.5 days, yay!

i'm going to morocco on friday! it's great, because finally everyone will be there... s's brothers and their partners. we haven't all been in the same place for far too long - they're a great bunch, a great family to gain.
and even though it's ramadan when i'm going there, it's fortunate that that's not the case in s's parents' house. mmmm, moroccan/lebanese/iraqi food... 8D

After years and years I finally got an updated avatar. This one is more smoothly animated than the old one. This image is from an unpublished fantasy novel The Helmsman. The picture itself is a tree fortress. You can see a little bit of the wood deck at the top of the avatar. She kinda sorta like a Huorn--but kinder and gentler. Below is a full length image.

Huh. That's neat.
I'm excited because I've been doing a pushup program for the last couple of weeks (it's super killer... almost don't end up finishing it every time O_o) and my biceps have grown a ton already. My chest is also getting some definition, but my biceps are the most notably different. I can also tell I'm stronger because I was picking up some boxes the other day that I've struggled with before but this time they weren't bad at all. I'm doing the pushups to get ready for p90x, which I'll be borrowing from a friend this Saturday. Gah I'm so freakin' excited. Can't wait to get into great shape. |

I have been doing the exercise bike and walking to get in shape. I am a 50 year old woman, past the years of getting any kind of muscle.

That's not truuuue. I've seen stories of lots of people over 50 who gained muscle on various weight lifting programs.
... but yeah biking and walking probably wont build much muscle. |

Depends on which ones. I've been biking everyday for the past 3 weeks now (for my job) and my cycling condition has definitely improved.
